Getting ready for Koni install - a couple questions
I decided to go with Koni Reds over Bilsteins mostly because I got an amazing deal on them -> $50. A 914 buddy of mine had bought these Koni fronts and installed them with a 5 lug conversion on his 914. He didn't like the ride with 911 struts and swapped them out for ones valved for a 914. These came gratis.
![]() EASY in Emeryville sold me some rears. They have a weird part number but after some hunting I've found that is the Koni Red part number in the European catalog. It seems crazy that they have different part numbers in Europe than in the US but they do. The only thing I can't figure out is if the "K" in the part number or "Special "D"" means anything special. ![]() My first questions is whether I will need additional hardware for the front inserts or will they fit with the existing Boge hardware? I know I'm supposed to remove the 10mm US ride height spacer. Is my understand correct that this will lower the body an additional 10mm without affecting the suspenion geometry? In a sense it screws me up because I think my car is too raked as it is now and the rear will need to come down more than 10mm. The third question is how many turns should I set the rears to? On full soft with some effort I can move the piston down and up. With just adjustment one turn stiffer I can't even pull the piston back up by hand. Will that make installation difficult? BTW, these are the ones that have 2 1/4 turns of adjustment. Are there any other installation tricks? Do I need to make the rubber stops any shorter? Those fronts look like the correct ones for Boge. The ones for the Koni strut don't have the little narrow step down at the bottom. Koni for Koni won't fit in a Boge. Koni for Boge will fit in a Koni with a special collar nut. You can cut the snubbers down by one ring if you like. I preserve the taper part, cutting one the of big rings off.
On the rears, I don't know what T-bars you have, but I up the shocks a turn anyway and maybe a turn and a half for a little bigger bar. If you have like 3-4 steps up on the bars, you probably ought to be running custom valved shocks or Sports. The Koni folks say leave them alone for stock bars and turn them up with age. |

The torsion bars are stock.
Will I need any additional hardware for the fronts? Or will the Boge hardware bit? Anyone have an idea about the 10mm doughnut on the front? |

Use the same hardware. I'm not familiar with the doughnut. Where does it go?

It's a 10mm washer that sits between the top of the shock and the body of the car. My understanding was that it was used to comply with DOT ride height requirements for the SC.

The doughnut was a large washer added to the bottom of the upper strut mount to raise the car to conform with US bumper laws. I just can't remember what years had this installed.
