Replacing steering rack gaiters
I'm afraid as I'm doing some work on the car I have yet more questions...
I'm about to replace my steering rack gaiters as they are showing signs of perishing. I have new track rod ends to fit as well. The PO fitted a turbo tie rod conversion. Can anyone give me any tips for steering rack gaiter replacement? I'm trying to avoid removing the rack from the car, so I just wondered if the collective can offer some advice re techniques to ease the new gaiters on. Thanks in advance.

well, i got really p*ssed with the std retaining springs.....
so i opted for long zip ties, much, much easier to install. i don't known how you get those springs on.

Oh, part of my parts order is replacement OE springs. They are surprisingly expensive!

Two thin screwdrivers help hook and roll the spring on. Once you get it about half way you can carefully roll the boot 90-180 degrees and finish the job.

Damn
![]() Thanks for the advice John. Wonder how the pros do this type of job? Tools? I suppose a sort of bradawl with an angle on the end to hook under the gaiter might work - but I'd have to be careful that I don't tear the gaiter. How much more work is it to get the rack out?

I did one Sunday since one of my boots had split. I few good wacks on the tie rod end and then you can carefully push the boot over the end. I used a lift which made it easier, but it couldn't have taken 3 minutes. Yoiu have to use two tools or it will slip off.
