Restarting a 3 year laid up engine
The on going restoration is almost at the engine firing up stage.
The enging has not been started for 3 years but before being laid up I poured some oil down the plug holes and have turned the engine over by turning the fan pulley. Prior to the first fire up - is there any special requirements for these engines or is it just a case of turn the key and see what happens? |

rob,
personally, i would pull the plugs, squirt some oil in each cyl. turn over by hand. then i would turn off ign/fuel supply and spin the motor over on the starter to get some oil pressure. then i would go for it. good luck.

I unplug the fuel pump connector in the engine bay.

Old gas? If there is still gas in the tank from 3 yrs ago, you may want to drain the tank, at the tank, and pour some fresh gas in, rock the car (or tank of you have it out) for a little while, then drain that gas out. Check your gas lines and filters for build up. Remember, when you drain the gas, that you will have to turn the fuel pump on for about 20 seconds (more if it is an MFI) to get the system filled again BEFORE trying to start it.
Good luck, Terry Hastings

Terry - the tank is empty, repainted etc and all the fuel lines have been replaced apart from the one on the engine itself.
PBH - where's the fuel pump connector in the engine bay? The car is a 3.2 Carrera with Motronic Injection. |

Wouldn't it be the DME Relay under the drivers seat (at least in US)? Wouldn't that also take care of the spark issue too? I have no idea if the starter will/will not turn over w/o relay because I've never tried it. I suspect the starter will turn over just fine but no fire, which is just what you want.

Why would you ever want to sell your 911?

The DME relay is under the passengers seat - unplugging it seems the way to go.
My plan is to have the engine running within the next 4 weeks and the car road worthy by middle of November all going well!!!! |
