Can anyone recommend a knowledgable, reliable, reasonable independent Porsche mechanic/shop in the SF East Bay area?
Thank you in advance... ![]()

96,
Consider re-posting with a more informative subject line. There are plenty of Pelicans in the SF Bay area who are all too happy to help you out.

I would call EASY in Hayward (I think that is where they are) and ask them.

i will second valhallas in lafayette. there are others in the east bay area or east of the caldecot tunnel but none compare. i heard kahlers is good but are slowly phasing out of the early 911s (true?). EASY is a salvage shop and R Gruppe hangout in emeryville.

hi-tech in san rafael is a pretty good shop, and Devin, the head guy there is as nice and honest as they come. been there twice durring my long distance trecks, and have had good experience the 2 times ive been there. also i have heared many good things about them from others i know in the area. not quite east bay, but i thought id put in a word for them.

Here's a starting point - GGR PCA list of local mechanics.
http://www.pca-ggr.org/localmechanics.html I haven't found a Porsche mechanic in Berkeley. I'm told Griffin Autowerke on San Pablo near Gilman does Porsches, but when I've driven by I haven't seen many 911s in the lot. A fair number of aircooled VWs, though. Let us know if you find a good Porsche shop in the "near East Bay". Dublin (Kahler's) is kind of a trek.

I would recommend AVR in the San Francisco. Talk to Albert Von Rekowski. He is incredibly knowledgable and has steered me in the right direction everytime. He has been working on German cars for years and used to race Speedsters back in the 50s and 60s. His number is 415-474-0600.

Griffin Autowerke doesn't seem like the kind of shop that inspires you to bring your 911 there. I actually saw lots of watercooled VWs and Audis there last time.
A friend has recommended S-Car-Go in San Rafael which is not too far from Berkeley but a PITA if you have to leave it. I guess rental cars are cheap in the grand scheme of things if you find a good shop that you trust. I'll probably do most of the work on the car myself but I work in Berkeley and it would be nice to have a name or two where I could bring it if something came up that I didn't want to tackle. |

I've also heard that Valhalla is a good shop, but that the owner can be pretty tempermental -- nothing I've experienced first hand, but that was the comment of two other porsche owners who've done business with him.

the dude from AVR laughed at me, and told me, "i'm sorry" when i told him i had a 1975 car. when i told him it was super clean, he said, "with the 2.7, it cant be that clean". nuff said, i blew off that 3.0 snob.
funny now that i think back about it.

I've always gone to Porsche Restorations in Crockett -ask for Pete. Good guy and I've always been pleased with the results...that is, when I couldn't DIY...
