Thanks 911SC...thats a nice link with great pics. Note the similarities in designs and how they evolved through the years. I am going to send that to my friends who may not have been exposed to or fully understand the magic.

Funny, my '66 912 has a factory 5-speed, yet the website lists 1969 as the introduction of them. Hummmm....

Maybe we could explain some of the inaccuracies, so others can get the correct information, so the history is explained correctly.

Not knowing the complete history myself (I've read the Porsche 911 Ledgend book 10 yrs ago) I'd say that the 356 roadster was developed after a coupe 356...

But what is he writing about chain tensioners requiring excessive maintenance... he's talking about the pre hydrolic (= carrera) tensioners right? What do the hydrolic ones need in terms of maintenance?

Fun to have a quick read though... thanks 911S!

I think I'd check this fact.

The very, very first 356 ( number 1...that some now...including author Ludvigsen say was really a post war VW....and not a Porsche) ...was a roadster. Actually , a "no top" roadster. Mid engine.

The next 40-50 cars out of the same workshop in Gmuend, Austria were purposely rear-engine coupes, because the sales appeal of a closed car with luggage room was deemed more "practical" for the post-war realities of the time. After production moved to Stuttgart around 1950-51.. I believe then a cab was considered and developed. Look also at the early America roadsters, which ( again) were something different with their Brit-inspired down-cut doors!
