Flywheel Seal- Replace good one if I have the chance?

Howdy-

I am doing a complete clutch job (Pelican super kit) and typical oil leak repairs on my '78 SC. Here's my question and dilemma:

The flywheel seal looks like it is in PERFECT condition and is not that old. It was replaced when the engine was rebuilt 8yrs/ 35,000 miles ago. It looks like it was bedded in some sort of sealant and I really don't want to disturb it. Am I crazy to want to leave it in there? I have a new one, I'm just afraid of bunging up a good thing.

Your thoughts and expertise would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Brian

I bet someone on here is going to say replace it because it is 8 years old and the rubber is getting tired. I say unless you are completely comfortable doing the replacement, leave it alone! If it isn't leaking now, that seal has a lot of good years and miles left on it.

B-
I am going to go againist the grain and say replace it. I did the same thing and didn't replace it and within six months the stupid thing was leaking. I think if you take your time while replacing it you won't have any problems. YMMV

You can say they all "ain't broke", right up til the leak starts. It's easy to replace. If you leave it, fate will step in and it will leak. You already in there....

Just MHO. YMMV.

thanks for the inspiration- last night i decided the old flywheel seal needed to come out, and indeed it did! it was much smoother than i expected. the new one went in well, and i used the old seal as a tool to gently tap it in.
hopefully i won't need to look at it for a long time!
