wire in multi-pin engine connector

The 14 pin engine connector from a 1986 engine has two red wires in it. #14 seems normal -- it's the alternator wire. The other red wire goes to pin #2 on the connector.

pin 2 is always hot (has +12 volts even when the key is off). What's wierd is that when I turn the key on (with the battery disconnected) pin #2 has continuity with ground (but not when the key is off). This doesn't seem right to me.

Is this normal?

And what does the pin 2 red wire do on a Carrera engine anyway?

Thanks.
