Question Stock looking speaker installs

OK, I just spent 90 minutes going through the archives looking for speaker info. Now I am more confused than ever!

I have an 87 coupe. Still has the stock stereo. I'll handle the head unit myself.

My question is regarding speakers. I obviously want to replace them. But I do NOT want to do any cutting and I DO want to reuse the stock grills. 5 1/4 front, 4 X 6m rear.

I also want to keep the cost reasonable. I am not looking for audiophile sound here. I just want to be able to listen to the occasional CD and my favorite radio station once in a while. My main music source is the 3.2!

Does anyone know what brand / model speakers fit the front and rears for sure without mods and reusing the grills?

Go to www.crutchfield.com and see what fits your car. I have Polk Audios in the front with the original speaker grills. They are 5.25" Polks. In the rear, I have the original rear shelf with the perforated holes in the leather. I put 5X7" in the rear but it is a bit of a clearance problem and the rear shelf sits about 1/4" high at very rear. I have heard that Sony Xplode 5X7s will fit without the gap in the rear. Blaupunkt and Pioneer make perfect fit 4X6s but do look at crutchfield's website and search for your car.

Mel:

Crutchfield is no help on the rears. They do not carry a 4 X 6m.

Do you have a model # on the Polks or Pioneer rears?

shows some speakers that fit. I can tell you that I bought some 4X6m speakers first and they did not fit and I ended up getting the 5X7s. The speakers bolt in to the existing bolt with some help

I have also heard that Polk Momo 4X6s will fit.

I have Focal Polygalss component coaxial speakers in 5 1/4 size. No cutting, direct bolt in. They are about $300 but can be found cheaper. Very nice clean sound.

The rears were cheap and direct bolt in (their grills). Phoenix Gold Tantrum 4X6 $100.00 but I don't have much power going to them since I just use them for "fill in"

I picked up a pair of JBL gto series rear speakers. They fitted exactly and cost £25 ($45) from a local motor factors.
They sound pretty good for the price.

Joe:

Very nice! JL Audio is one of my favorite brands.

Do you have a model #? Did the adaptor come with the speakers and did it screw right in?

Just put in a pair of Pyle 6X4 speakers 2 mths ago. Cost abt US$50 and they sound ok. nothing fanatastic but sounds fine. For the front, there are lots of 5.25" speakers around.

Alpine makes a nice pair of 4x6 for the rear. Put them in my dad's car using the original grill covers. Looks like a factory setup but sure doesn't sound like one They are the Alpine Type S 4x6. They have a blue cone, but it is not noticeable under the factory grills.

Just found the leaflet ! the speakers were JBL GTO6425e.
For the money they pretty good ,
40wRMS 120W peak ,my sony cd puts out 45W per channel and they work fine.
I originally bought a pait of 6x9`s and were going to cut out the panels but found (like a dork!) they were far too deep (damm bulkhead)
They were sony Xplod brilliant speakers and very good value.
If they did the sonys in 4x6 i would of bought them.

Webini: Model # TR400CXI. Adapters are JLA. I used the speaker grill screws to hold the setup in there. Here's a pic of the speaker when I was replacing an old broken grill underneath. (Warning: if you tighten the grills down too tight, they will crack when the heat from the sun causes the plastic to flex. Just lightly snug them down or better yet, use a soft rubber washer between the grill and the speaker to give it some room to expand).
