Oops, that made it smoke.....

I have an 83 SC, 80k miles, stock except for muffler. Under hard acceleration today, I brought the car a bit higher in the RPM range than I have ever before. I was trying to get onto the freeway, and got a little too excited. I think it went quite a bit into the red but didnt feel a rev limiter. I have only had the car smoke a little bit under hard throttle, but only a puff. This time, as I let off the gas and slowed down, the car just started puffing bluish smoke. I slowed to pull over, still in gear, and it kept on smoking. I dropped into neutral and pulled over. Car was running warm due to the 100 degree temps, but other than that, it seemed fine. Smoke stopped as soon as I went into neutral. Any ideas what this may be? Should I be worried? I hope i didint hurt her too bad. Car seems to be running just fine on the drive home. Any help appreciated.

Thanks,

Jeff

Does it still smoke or did it go away?

keep the oil level half way between the marks on the dipstick. you probably sloshed some oil into the intake thru the hose at attaches to the filler neck.

I guess that could be what happened, but the oil is right in that range. I guess given how hot it was it could have affected the level a bit? Thank you John,

Jeff

I thought that smoke after letting off the gas on hard acceleration was a sign of valve guides going. Am I wrong?

Yes....the excessive vacuum created bu high revs and a closed throttle will pull oil into the cylinders but shouldn't result in large amounts suddenly. It would be barely noticeable and get worse over time.

I like the large amount sucked into the intake theory.

BUT...the phrase "quite a bit into the red" worries me. 911s are for the most part, not kidding about redlines. The mathmatics of inertia, etc are not pretty above the redline. Over revving is not to be taken lightly.

I suggest you drive hard more often, so when you need to you will be more practiced at it.

Lol, I usually do. This time it just got a bit much of me. I usually know the shifting points by sound, so it is hard to say how much i got in the red. Car seems fine I was just curious

In my car, redline is just a suggestion.
