Installing Steve Wong Chip for the Mechanically Impaired

I started reading this board after I heard that ANY question or problem about 911s could be answered on it. Unfortunately, I am a doctor, not a mechanic, so ANy work on my car was approached with dread and fear.

Fortunately, you guys talked me through changing the steering bushings and now I have accomplished changing out the chip.

Just getting the Motronic box out require two trips to Sears just to get the right length 10mm socket. After finally getting the box out and apart, I followed every line of the instructions to the tee for fear I would never get the car started again. (The closest Porsche dealer and mechanic is 100 miles away.) But everything went back together without a problem.

So now the car drives great and I feel like I have a new car. I have a friend with a new Carrera S Cabriolet, but my little mods have quenched my desire to spend 95K on a new 911.

Thanks for your help.

Great news Joe! Steve W chips do spice things up a little. Oh yeah...it doesn't hurt that you have an absolutely amazing model and vintage 911 (1987 Carrera 3.2 Targa)!!!

1987 Carrera is THE car to have.... and don't feel bad - I was distracted and installed my Steve Wong chip backwards. No spark, no fire, just gas being pumped into the motor.

My wife asked how it could help performance if the car didn't even run... Thanks dear.

I got to agree, the `87 is the car. Of course, white is a great color as well. I think we are about to start the "Ultimate" 1987 thread (oh no)

Jeremy,
I read your post from last year about installing it backwards. Your comments really heightened my awareness to put the chip in oriented correctly. Thank you for the warning.

I thought that would just make the car go very fast ... but only in reverse ...
