A/C system......in or out ?

Is the a/c really so useless that I should just get rid of it ?? Charging is not a problem as I can still get R12 for free but if it doesn't work that well any way then why bother ?....

R12 for free? Who do you know and how can I meet them?
A/C on the 88 works OK. If you don't mind sweating then rip it out. I have 40-50 degrees coming out of the vent even when its 90 something outside (as long as I am moving). When it heats up (sitting in the parking lot) it will take about 5-10 minutes to cool down but after that it is comfort city.

You can have a tank of R12 the size of a 55 gallon drum sitting in your passenger seat and the car still wouldn't be cold. Germans don't know air conditioning.

If you want A/C and have $1500 you are willing to spend on it to make it work marginally OK, then don't take it out.

If you don't want to sink money in to it , and you want to lose some weight, then rip it out.

Took mine out and haven't regretted it for an instant, even during 250-mile road trips to Watkins Glen on high-80s days. Of course New York isn't Houston...

it was over 90 degrees outside and I had to turn my air down because it was to cold

after replacing my 84 TL with the 87 TL I decided that at least one of my Porsche's should have air that blows cold so I took the car over to Scott's independent ( AKA - performance aire ) They specialize in making 911's blow cold air .

here is a link showing what they did, if you click on the pictures it enlarges the pictures and explains what they are doing

http://www.scottsind.com/Navigation/WorkInProgress/SamC/WIPSamCFrame.htm

it's not a cheap upgrade, but then again nothing that really works ever is.

Great ,now I'm really confused.....I guess I'll see how it works first as the S.O. is a creature of comfort (not that she's going to driving it much!!)..........
Also ,what is the small illuminated arrow that points upward in my tach ??...
Sam.

I went down this same diecision path about two months ago and decided to keep mine and charge it with Duracool. First, removing the A/C will hurt the marketability if/when you decide to sell it. Second, using Duracool (Propane) is not harmful to the environment when it leaks out. Just buy a case and charge it when needed.

Sam.

if your talking about the upshift light in the middle of the tach I had it removed when I had my gauges done, the last thing I needed is the car telling me when to shift.

Why are you asking us?

Seriously, do you like to sweat? No, you're not going to be able to hang any meat in your car without some modifications, BUT a properly working stock A/C does OK and makes Summer driving much more comfortable. My '86 is bone-stock and works rather well. I would keep it, unless you're going to make it a track-only car.

I've been struggling with this same decision for some time now.

I charged the system up last summer and it worked, sort of. Never got below 55 degrees at the vent.
in order to make it work I will have to spend some bucks.
I don't know if I will ever do that, I only drive the car occasionally and might want to use the air conditioner maybe 10 days a year. I haven't even installed the AC belt since the last time I had it off in November.
In the mean time it's just dead weight.
Since it doesn't work very well now I guess I could always just remove the compressor and condensor and leave the hoses in place (sealed of course) and reinstall the parts if I ever get the bug to fix it right.
Plus to install a decent intercooler I will have to lose the condensor anyway or move it to a different location.

What to do...............

Doesn't the 'cool collar' help bring down a/c vent temps?

I upgraded my car with the Performance Aire parts and DIY in 2000 was around $1K. But it hasn't needed a recharge in 4 years. Diane was very helpful in the process. Even superheated, my car cools down not to frigid levels but nice enough to evaporate sweat on a 95+ day in Dallas TX.

I wish they had the triple row cooler when I was re-doing mine.

How long have you had the car???

If you managed a full summer without using it much, you will never notice it being gone.

I had mine in for 6 years, never used it because it didn't blow cold... Had it charged then it blew a bit colder. Well, after getting the "lightweight" bug I rationalized that I NEVER used it for 5 years and used it a couple of times when it was "better"... SO, do I NEED it? NO. I live in Colorado. Summers can get pretty warm here and I have a black interior. My car was my daily for two years. No problems... The best thing I did was to leave in the blower and tint my windows... and remove the A/C.

For the record, I am one of those that sunk a ton of money into the A/C - and it now works great. I would do it again.

Ironically, I still drive around with the windows down but with the A/C running full blast just to enjoy the mechanical orchestra.
