Identifying a missing hose

1969 911T

There is a hose missing in the engine. It appears to have been cut off. On either side of the alternator fan shroud is an outlet from the engine where a black hose goes down I presume into the heat exchangers. It is intact on the left side, but has been obviously cut off on the right. The opening is right below the oil filler. Hose is about 2" diameter, black shrouded foil.

Can anyone identify this and tell me why it may have been removed from the right side? I was going to replace it, but wanted to check if there may be some logical reason for it to have been taken off first.

If my description is not clear, I can snap a digital pic tomorrow.

Jim

Is it like the two black 2" hoses on the left and right in this pic:

If so, those direct air from the main axial cooling fan through your heat exchangers. When the heater valves are open, the air continues up to the cabin. When closed, the hot air is exhausted to atmosphere below the car.

If your hose is missing, cap off the outlet next to the fan until you have repaired it. A spray can cap works perfectly. Your engine's cooling system is losing air out the open hole (not good). Hope this helps.

That's exactly it.

I would imagine that the right one is for the passenger side vent, as I am getting heat from under the driver's side dash. (but a lot of exhaust smell too, which I would expect means that the control boxes are probably bad.)

I will throw a new hose on the right side tomorrow.

Thanks a bunch.

If you smell exhaust in your heat, then your heat exchangers are rusted out, and exhaust (including the carbon monoxide and other goodies) is mixing with the fresh air and coming into the cabin. Discontinue use of your heat immediately and look into getting some new heat exchangers.
