67 911S soft window targa F/S?

My best friend's sister has been bugging me for a while to help her sell her husband's 911, evidently he's without clue when it comes to porsches. I have no idea how he came to own this car.
Anywho, this is how she described it:

1967 911S targa, soft rear window. Original 2 liter engine, carbs changed to webers.
Small rust spot below battery, one rust bubble the size of a dime at the bottom corner of the windsheild, and a couple of rust spots at the bottom rear of the front fenders. They say the floors and rear seat area are all solid.

Her husband said he used to start it up and let it idle every weekend but about 3 years ago the battery(ies?) went dead and he hasn't touched it since (shudder). It supposedly ran good before the batteries died.
The car is in Riverside, ca. and is kept in the garage.
Any guesses on what it is worth?
How rare is a soft window 67S?

I think she said it was red.
If there's any real interest maybe I'll go check it out this weekend and get a better idea of condition and pics.
I'm not really up on the old cars, didn't know there was such thing as a soft window S.

Maybe i'll ask some questions on the early S board and do some rersearch so I'll know what i'm looking at.

I've done a little research and have been informed that all 67 targas were soft window, and this car came originally with webers and not zeniths, the only thing I haven't found is a realistic estimate of what these cars are worth. I found the 911 FAQ, but those prices were written 9 years ago.
Does anyone know a source for reasonable prices for these cars so i know what to tell the seller?

I think the price will depend on condition. First you need to verify that it is indeed an S. Teh VIN number will have an S stamped at the end of the 6 digit number. Youw ill also need the engine number and type from the rib at the lower right section of the fan support. Its stamped in the case.

I have seen SWT "S" cars go for big bucks($20-30K) in pristine condition. I think you could start about $8-10K for a driver that was mechanically sound and needed some cosmetic (paint/interior/top) work. Some will say this is a low price but condition is everything. The price could go up from there depending on condition. If the drivetrain needs work, price goes down. If there is rust on the chassis, the price goes down.

I would really like some pictures of the car. I have been keeping my eye out for a SWT project for a while. You can email or PM throught he board.

AFAIK they have made no attempt at selling the car, it has just sat in the garage completely ignored.

I'm going to try and get over there to check it out closely this weekend including pics.
They've hit me us several times to do this but I always blew it off because there wasn't anything in it for me and it seemed like a hassle, but I'm finally going to get involved as a favor to them.
If they have a wild idea that it's worth big bucks I'll jump out quickly and post the results here, if they are reasonable hopefully I'll be able to help someone get a nice car.
So far my guess is that because the batteries are dead and the car has some rust, it'll be worth less than $5k in current condition. If he gets it running so it can be driven without any mechanical problems, that price will nearly double.
If they expect to sell it for $15k as is, I'm out of there.

Make sure to check the top condition. Both the center targa top and the rear soft window. they are both really expensive to replace correctly. Seals are also quite expensive for the top.

even as a non running car...if all the pieces are there it is worth money to people...

the soft window setup alone is 2K region...

you should definately post this thread at the early S registry and get gobs of pictures...I am sure some wise old timers there will steer you in the right direction

I bought my '67 S Targa two years ago for $9,000. It has 48K on the odometer, leather sport seats, H-1's, '72 S steel bumper, and a fresh top-end rebuild. The paint and chrome are very nice. There's a little rust but not much. Hope that helps.

The rust is a bad sign. The fact the car's been sitting is also problematic. These 2.0 engines need regular exercise or things go rotten very quickly.

The early 911S registry guys will be looking for original details. Original radio? Complete door panels? Original steering wheel? The two features most desirable on a '67 are the original low back sport seats and 4.5" Fuchs wheels, both are extremely rare and worth BIG BUCKS.

And while a '67 S soft window Targa is indeed very rare, I don't agree about the additional $2K. A soft window targa tends to sell for less than a sunroof coupe.

the extra 2K is just from know what it costs if I were to go out and try to buy the pieces...the handles in particular are impossible to find...the hoops can easily be fabricated if you have originals to work off of...

ask me how I know how difficult is to find and how expensive these parts are

I'd say with an early S and the novelty and rarity of the soft window...it will add a premium over a similar S targa...

the car is not red, it is aubergine (sp?) or eggplant purple.
Don't know if that adds or subtracts from the value but no doubt it narrows the field.
I have to work tomorrow due to an emergency (no joy) so the only chance for me to see the car this weekend will be sunday after church.

Aubergine definitely doesn't help you. More people would rather look at a purple Porsche than own one.

In my opinion....the 67s targa is worth more than a 67s coupe......FAR less made (400 some odd targa's), and you start asking around, and there is a lot more desire among the early car afficianado's to find the S softie.

Nate scored his car for a great price.....and it's stunning (Nate, you sent me a pic about a year ago..).

I just picked up a very nice 67 S targa about 3 months ago, and paid more than Nate, but far less than what I believe "market price" to be.

Current high market on a restored car is $35K to $50K depending upon what was done, and who did it. Hard to say what kind of price on an original low mileage car.....as I have never heard of one.

Restoration cars?.....hard to say, $5k is too low, unless it is completely trashed. So $7K to $10K for the non driver needing resto work....but not completely "gone".

One of the big problems is trying to find original 67S parts.....so if it's not all there.....expect the price to go down....items include: 4.5 x 15 alloys, interior door/door handle deco, exterior below door deco's etc.

Love to see some pics....here's mine with non original wheels (being corrected, 4.5 wheels at Weidmans as we speak)

Guys, nice cars!

I recall a 67' 911S soft window sitting outside a shop I worked at in the late 1970's. It had very low miles but was hit in the left rear. I could have picked it up for about $2K. Unfortunately, I was only making about $125 a week at that time. I wonder if it was ever restored or if it was eventually parted out.

Does anybody want to trade their soft window Targa for a 17K mile original mint 87' Targa? ;-)
