When I worked at the Porsche shop, I wasn't a tech but the ones who where used to hit the cap with a hammer on angle and knock it off with a couple hits. One tool, 10 seconds, done.

Chisel with a big f’n hammer and it came right off with minimal damage to the cap.

Putty knife. Tap it around to break the seal. Walk the knife around to twist it out. I use a rubber mallet.

Maybe all these fine ideas work, I don't know. Years ago (30 maybe more) I did my first wheel bearing grease job. I got this tool and have been very pleased with it many times.
![]() Tighten the jaws on the grooves in the cap, add the long bar and my slide hammer and its off in a few slides.

as mepstein said all you need is a hammer..but the best is this one..have been using it since the 1980`s..;-) use the thinner side of it,,works just perfect...

Lots of ways. Some more "professional" than others.
This works perfectly well for me. small stick of wood and hammer: strike (light tap), rotate, strike, rotate, ... takes maybe 5 taps.

So you could have saved me many dollars had I known this more than 30 years ago .I end up hitting places I don't want to now when I swing a hammer (like my wrist or my thumb) . Now I'm sticking with my method.Mike

I cut down a 2" piping riser clamp, welded in parts of two Ubolts. Two pry bars on the ears of the riser clamp and they slide off. Less than $15 in parts.

Lots of good ideas in this thread, just adding the one that worked for me - a medium-sized welding clamp.

Last year when I rebuilt my front end, new car to me, I had a terrible time getting them off. I think it was the first time they had ever been removed. 42 years… I used a muffler clamp to get hold of the cap and pried it out. I like Spetrow’ tool, but I’ll try Thorndyke’s next time… If i’m still alive. 😊
