Sway bar installation help

I’m trying to install a rear sway bar. I have an 18mm sway bar that fits 78-89 cars which is attached to the swing arm via a 12mm bolt through the drop link. My swing arms are the 74-77 variety that utilize a ball cup and round stud arrangement. Can the ball stud be cut off and tapped for 12mm bolt? Is there enough material in the swing arm after the stud is cut off to tap a hole of sufficient depth to hold the sway bar?

Funny, I don't think I've run into this thread topic before - late sway bar pieces in an early type (<74) control arm.

Many aftermarket sway bars use the spring plate to attach the drop link. Obviously, this doesn't help with your factory drop link. I wonder if Elephant Racing's drop link kit can retrofit to a factory bar and to the spring plate?

Maybe someone who's done this will come up with the easy answer short of fabricating a new piece.

We are doing this same setup on a 76, We are adding aftermarket mounts to the torsion bar tube since the welded body mounts are thin and weak and one is already broken, we are keeping the ball/cup mounts on the arms and will fab a new drop link to sanp on the ball mount and attach to the later years sway bar being used. We can post some pics when we get it installed?

Craig,

Pics would be great. What aftermarket mount are you using?

The mount is the one sold with the Weltmeister bars when your car does not have an attachment point. They are around 70 bucks. Here is a pic of the mount on my 912.

Craig,
It looks like you took WM's U-bolt-on-the-torsion-tube sway bar mount and attached it somehow (welded?) to the chassis - or maybe the pic is not wide enough to see the torsion bar tube. Hope you can show us the modified drop link when you're done.

I will get a good pic when I get my parts, its really easy to do, no welding at all. Its hard to see this one because I have it undercoated black.
