993 ?kinematic? problem?

Hey everyone,

No idea if anyone can help with this, but I thought I'd ask. One of our customers has a 993 and the clutch has had a problem with not returning for a while, finally it's gotten really bad, and he has maybe 1 inch of pedal travel in the clutch. We bled the clutch and that seemed to make it go away for a while, but when we bled it not a single air bubble came out and the fluid was just a little dirty, which doesn't really scream that there's a problem in the hydraulic system. THe customer found an article online about the 993 clutch pedal having a "kinematics" problem, and he bought a new lever from Porsche and asked us to install it to fix the problem. THe new part is the 4th superceeded part, which probably means porsche has no clue what's wrong, but anyway.

Today I pulled the pedal cluster out of the car and removed to existing lever. Much to my surprise someone else had already updated it to the latest part number, so obviously that's not the problem, or if it is, there's not much to do about it. It seems more likely that the nylon piece that the spring sits on is catching the lever and preventing it from returning. It just seems like there's absolutely no reason for the pedal to stick. Since I'm not really a 993 guy I thought I'd ask if anyone with a 993 has encountered and fixed this problem. THanks in advance

Andrew

The slave cylinders are notorious for failing on the 993s. The master cylinder has been known to fail as well. Have these been changed lately on the car in question.

I have not had to deal with the hanging cltch pedal problem, thankfully. So, can't help you with the kinematic arm fix. Have you read this: http://p-car.com/diy/pedal/

Very common problem. It can only be one or more those three things - kinematic lever, master or slave cylinder. Slaves do not last long on these cars.

well, strangely enough today the problem seems to be fixed with simply replacing the lever, which makes no sense as the updated part had already been installed. However, the brand new part does not rub that nylon piece I was taking about. In fact it has about 4mm of clearance! So, how can two parts which appear identical and have the same part numbers be that different? The clutch was bled after reinstalling the pedal cluster of course, but that was also done before it was removed which didn't help much. Somehow it's fixed though, does anyone happen to know if porsche used different specs on the same part numbers of kinematic levers?
