Porsche Crest Standard versus Heavy duty hood shock?

Fall is here so with the cool weather it's time for my annual replacement of hood shocks. My question is whether the heavy duty hood shocks, at twice the price, last that much longer than the standard shocks. I've always used the standard but will go with the HD if they're that much better.

I've had both styles and both leave much to be desired.

I think the best fix for hood shocks was posted a while back where the shock is drilled out and a pin is inserted into it holding it open. When you want to close the hood simply remove the pin. This version will last forever and youll never have to buy a hood shock again.

Annual replacement? What's up with that?

(I have the heavy duty ones. Other than PITA to install, they've been great.)

The locking feature was dropped a while ago, like on the 356, when the owners (or usually their well meaning friends) went to close the lids, only to put a nice fold in them because of the unlocked support.

I believe the heavy duty units (like Weltmeister's) have a lifetime warranty?

I use the weltmeisters front and back and no problems with keeping the lids up.

Like Kurt, I have weltmeisters front and back... they, so far have worked well... however, it has taken alot of fiddling to get the hood and lid to sit properly.

I have one on my Carrera.....for the rear deck lid. Works slightly different but I like as well.

I think the fear is someone closing the hood when it's locked in position. You could fold the hood.

Sounds like HD is the choice.

Wayne, do you sell the Weltmeister HD shocks? If not, what type do you carry?

I bought a set of heavy duty from Pelican about a year ago. They still work great, never had reg. last this long.

The only reason I bothered was my body guy insisted. Something about mussing his hair up, what a w&#252ss.

Thanks guys.

I'm going with the HD's from Pelican. Hopefully they will last longer than the standard.

Should have mentioned before, I installed the Weltmeister HD about 2.5 years ago and it still works like new.

I've had both styles, and have settled on the drilled out one with a pin, just like in Simon's picture. It's better than a prop bar (high winds won't cause problems) and 100% reliable.
