Will '77 stock muffler fit a stock '72

I need a quick fix exhaust and have been offered a standard single out, dual in muffler off a euro '77.

I have a stainless sports system on at present, so can't visually compare. Only have bad pics of '77 muffler too.

Question is, what are the differences if any? Are the inlets at the same spacing between models. Pelican lists two different part no.s for each. Why?

Please, nobody mention backpressure and MFI. I have heard every arguement, every way..

Thanks.

I will more than likely bolt to the heads...but you will "probably" need EVERYTHING from head to tip including hangers....

Thanks, but I was just talking about the rear muffler.
I have standard heat exchangers still on the '72.
I have all the straps/hangers etc for the standard muffler already.

They sure look the same from the pics, but is there some sort of irritating difference I should know about?

If you have a standard '72 heat exchanger setup, then the '77 will bolt up to it. There is a small difference in the orientation/position of the outlet

It will probably work ok but may look odd

Am I missing something here? I standard muffler off of a Euro '77 model was a single inlet, not dual. Won't bolt up to '72 heat exchangers...

Thanks guys. The difference must be only the tailpipe exit, allowing for a slightly lower exit point in the bigger bodied 77?

Yes, it is twin inlet. I'm no expert on the later cars so no comment there.

Anyway, should work, and I'll massage that tailpipe with the Mig to make it nice.

Cool

On small bumper cars, the exit of the muffler is horizontal with the horizontal seam of the muffler.

On big bumper cars, the exit of the muffler is ducted downward then out to pass the bumper.

Good luck,

Have I had too many beers this evening? There was no standard "standard single out, dual in muffler off a euro '77"...was there?!?!? My Euro '76 had a single inlet...I thought the single inlet started in '75? No thermal reactors on RoW cars??

How can a standard muffler off of a Euro '77 fit '72 heat exchangers?

I need another beer....

Mike

FWIW, mufflers that fit on my '76 with headers also fit on my '72 with the stock heat exchangers...

The thermal reactor cars had two in-one out mufflers that work with SSI's. My 77S had all the stock crapola on it when i bought it. I jettisoned the reactors for SSI's and bolted the muffler right up to it. So, if that is what you have it should bolt up to a 72 w/stock exchangers.

Beer is good, beer is good, beer is good..

Thanks Jeff. Looks like we're now both in the same boat re 'backdating'

lol

Fwiw, Madame Smith thinks my stainless exhaust is "too noisey", so rather than putting my chicken suit on this summer for another hen pecking, I thought I'd do the gentlemanly thing and install a quieter exhaust- for her birthday present.

Kind huh?

Matt,
we're in the same boat...kinda. Not doing any backdating...just putting the dual in quad out Borla from my '76 to my daily driver (the '72) to "tone it down," as my parents aren't too fond of the dual in/out flaumeister I had on the car. It's quieter...just a teeny weeny bit.
