Too good to be true? Thoughts on this ding? NOW WITH PIC!

Found a really nice Carrera I was really excited about, until I
learned about this ding, and now I'm not sure what to think....

http://cbesselievre.home.att.net/img_0134.jpg

I've not yet seen this car in person yet as it is not local to me
(someone from this site has been gracious enough to arrange to
go and check it out for me tomorrow).

From what I understand so far and the pictures I've seen the car
is probably about as good as they come otherwise. Low miles,
really excellent condition. I'm just not sure what to make of this
ding. Quite a shame for such an otherwise nice example.

How big a downer is this on the car's value? Repairable via one
of those paintless dent removal places? I'm not sure but I
wonder if the paint is damaged enough that trying to push it out
would be a bad idea. And I'm not sure how accessable that area
would be from behind. Wondering if this will be a deal breaker...

Thoughts?

If the car is going in a museum I'd take a pass but if you're gonna drive it don't worry too much. That ding could happen anywhere that you leave it parked for more than 10 minutes.

A paintless dent remover won't be able to help you with that as I don't think they can get behind it, and it looks too deep to get out totally.

This should be easily fixed by a good shop so I wouldn't let it be a deal breaker.
I had my 20 year old Black metallic paint matched perfectly a while back but I'm not sure how hard it is to match that color.

It is in a spot that would bug me enough to get it fixed.

Tell us more about the car. :)

It's not in the middle of the door or hood. Small areas like that are easy to blend.

Is this the sort of thing that would be better to have a good body shop fix or better to just leave as is? Wonder how much having that corrected would cost? Probably a lot more than I'd like to think.

From what I understand from photos and talking to the owner, the car is a low miles otherwise excellent 1989 Carrera 3.2 FWIW.

Prior to learning about the ding, I was convinced this was "the one". It still may be, but my enthusiam and faith is a bit shaken as I have only just now heard about this damage. Maybe it's not as big a deal as I'm making it out to be.

A fellow Pelicanite has been kind enough to offer to check over the car for me tomorrow, so I guess I'll have a better feel after that.

60K miles. I don't have anywhere to host more pics (a friend is hosting this one for me). Right now our negotiated price is appropriate for an excellent car of this age, mileage, and condition, though this ding may change that a bit.

He's going to let his wife know about the Porsche thing when he brings it home. What could possibly go wrong?
;)

What? Is that a bad idea you think?

anthony 10-02-2004 08:10 PM

My wild ass guess is that it wouldn't cost more than $500 to get fixed - probably less. I wouldn't let that stand between you and a nice car.

mmm 10-02-2004 08:10 PM

Dammit! I just managed to spill Pepsi all over myself. I 'R Smooooove.

OK, now where are my meds again? Hey, you guys are like my support group! :D

creaturecat 10-02-2004 08:22 PM

Cars like this one seem to go for anywhere from $23K to $27K. The ding may factor into that somewhat though.

Cognac Brown Metallic. Some hate it, others like it. Best described as kind of a bronzey, coppery, rootbeery, metallic brown.

It's not red, white, black, or silver. Then again it's not red, white black, or silver.

creaturecat 10-02-2004 08:57 PM

most people hate it. (that copperish bronzey rootberry metallic brown thing!) - is the price adjusted accordingly? how much?

Leland Pate 10-02-2004 08:58 PM

mmm, you can upload pics directly to this site. No need to "host" them.

Just look for "upload picture" in the reply screen.
For what it's worth, I like the color.
good luck,
