Wanted: Old 911 Center Dash Speaker, or at least a pic of a few...

I'm going to make an adapter plate for this speaker, sortof like this one:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2486314021

I can't see paying $150 for a plate of aluminum with a few holes in it, and a $20 speaker. The guy won't sell me just the plate either. Too bad, I'll just make 50 of them and sell them on the site!

Anyways, if you have an old speaker you could send me, or at the very least some good pics of them mounted in your dash, please post!

Thanks in advance!

-Wayne

Wayne,

Do you just need to see the speaker and the board that it mounts to to make a pattern? I've got one here on my desk...

Wayne,

You may want to do a trial run on this. As I remember, the dash top has little ears that stick out for the grill mounting pins to go through. This plate has to go under those ears. I think you have to slide one end in, then drop the other end and center the whole thing. I don't think you have to have any flex in the plate, but measurements might be critical.
Just a thought.

Steve

Wayne, PM me your snail mail address, I'll make a tracing for you...also, if you're interested, I know a guy down there who MIGHT have some NOS original '73 speakers left...I'm running one now, my old one placed in the closet. Oh, there are services out there that can recone original speakers too. Steve has a point tho...when replacing, it took a bit of wiggling on my part. However, I don't think the pic steve posted is an original speaker...looks like aftermarket with a homemade adaption plate.
Here's a pic of the real deal...That's funny I was told I couldn't post it...but I have posted the same pic here before...Whaazup, your new filter? Things have been really slow here on my end since you made the post about one...

trying again...

Whew...finally worked. Wayne, there are no surrounding plates on a factory install..the speaker holes line up with the mounting holes in the dash. I think the ebay auction is by some guy who figured out his own adaptor plate, trying to make a fast buck...

I wondered about the originality of the one I have too, but it looks like the original rivets holding the speaker to the board.
Just another mystery...

Steve...I doubt the speaker you removed was original...the one I bought as a replacement speaker and the original I removed were identical...I was lucky finding the replacement. A guy in California bought a box full of a dozen NOS...cost me over $100 for the replacement, but I'm an original phreak in some things. I was thrilled to be cutting open 30 year old Blaupunk sealing tape, and finding a perfect speaker in the box. Your template drawing measurements are close...using a tape I get 8mm center to center on the width mounting holes, 20mm on the length holes.
That's roughly 3.25 and 8 inches respectively. Trust me on this..I've taken these measurements from an original blaupunkt speaker... No rivets hold the original in place...just screws that grab into clips in the dash..
Since Wayne doesn't provide this service, I'll give a plug...

I found them through a google search...they wrote, saying they could recone my speaker for $50 plus $7.50 shipping, turnaround
time of about 3 weeks. But, by the time they responded, I'd found the NOS speaker supply, opted to go that route..

Thanks guys, check it out. I went to Best Buy tonite looking for 4x6 speakers, and I found that they had these there:

http://www.audio-warehouse.com/web/mdl/TSA4103/detail.asp

They are 4x10 - I didn't know they made them in that size. Well, I scooted home, tore open the box, and sure enough, they fit almost perfectly! The mounting holes don't line up of course, so I'll have to either drill holes in the car's metal dash top (not recommended), or make some fastening adapter that might work.

By the way, if you haven't been to an OSH Hardware store, I recommend it. I just moved near one, and they have a whole bunch of weird stuff, you'd never think a hardware store would stock. Full selection of complete metric hardware to start. Bolts big enough to build a bridge with. Good stuff - I spend hours in there. Home Depot used to have good selection, but now they are only mass market stuff. I'm going to head to OSH tomorrow to find some mounting hardware for this - it fits very, very well.

I wouldn't mind using a NOS one, but I think the sound quality in speakers has probably gotten a lot better since that speaker was made. Still cool though...

Wayne, that's funny...I was looking at a pair of pioneer 4X10's in a local car stereo shop...but kept looking. Answer the PM I sent...I think you'll find my tracing effort helpful, no matter which route you choose to take... (edit) Just got a PM from Wayne. He doesn't want the tracing. Anybody else want it? I'll hang on to it for a day or two before shredding..PM me with a snail mail address...first come, first served.
