Anyone have this sound system setup in their cars?

Hey all,

Ive been looking at some old posts about the Car Audio Innovations subwoofer setup and Ive been wondering if anyone here has installed one in an older than 1976 car. Has anyone?
Ive got a 74, and Im pretty sure the interiors are the exact same but not 100 percent on that. Are the interiors the same? Would that setup work on a 74'? Thanks for the infos guys!!

The one in my '75 worked fine. It's a good unit but very heavy. My new car will not have one -- saves 30 lbs.

I used to have one in my 73. Rod sets up a good system.

I just emailed him about the same question. He tells me they are not "air tight" for the early cars (in this case pre-76) so I am not sure. Jack, what was your experience with the fit and sound in an early pan?

I am the new owner of Jack's CAI box. It fits reasonably well in my '74. It has a small gap over the shifter tunnel, but I don't see why it couldn't be modified for a tighter seal.

Not having it hooked up yet (just got it this weekend), I contributed what I could. I'll try to post some impressions when I get the stereo installed and tuned.

Whole deal.
The plan is to have some 7" two-way speakers in the door (probably Dynaudio or Focal), a Nakamichi Head unit, an amp or amps of some sort (not sure what I'll need yet), and two JL Audio 8" subs in the back. I'm hoping that will do the job.

sic, your system is going to be what my future plan is.. almost.

I already have my alpine deck,
to buy im probably gettting either: JL, Alpine, or Infinity 6.5 inch components for doors; JL Alpine or Infinity 5.25 inch coaxials or components for rear;8 inch JL subs from CAI if you say they do indeed sound good on a 74; and either a JL 500/5, Eclipse 5 channel, or a Kenwood 5 channel Amp; Monster Cap.

Are you wiring your stuff by yourself or paying for it?
And if you are doing it by yourself what guage speaker wire would you use for your doors and rears?

If I can make a suggestion, check out some MB Quart speakers before you do anything. I have found them to consistently be the best value around. A little more expensive than most, but well worth it when you hear the difference in your car.

which MB's? Ive seen a grip of them for sale different models varying but similar pricing... on http://www.acaraudio.com/ Can you tell me what ones have the best clarity for highs and lows? What is the sound comparable to?

Dunno yet. I could do either, but I'll probably pay since I'm a lazy bastard. If I do end up doing the install, I'll call somebody that really knows to ask questions about gauge, etc.

Depends on what you want to spend. Based on what you described above as your setup, I would look at the MB Quart QSD 216 (6.5") and the MB Quart QSD 213 (5.25"). the only thing you may want to check is the 6.5" fit in the doors. They may be too deep. I would swap the positioning from what you described, and put the 6.5" in the back, and 5.25" in the doors. I assume you are trying to avoid cutting any more into your car than necessary.

If you want to save a little $$, you can look at the PCE 213 and 216. They are good speakers, but significantly less expensive. I don't know how serious an audiophile you are. Some people can't hear the difference. And if you have a targa or a cab, or drive with the sunroof open, you probably won't notice a difference.

ive got a coupe. the price range is around 100-250 for the front, 100 150 rear. I have room depth wise for 6.5 in doors, not on the rear tho. i already tried to put 6.5 in the rear with some cheaper alpines. No dice. Looking to get what sounds best for the money for the front, and rears no idea on neccessity of components or not.

First, I would put one in the smuggler's box for wt. distribution.

Second, I'm sure Rod's enclosure will be fine in your car. Mine was fine in my '75. He is very conscioentious - if you accept some fit and finish issues (I won't even call them problems) you'll be happy.
