window rattle
Any one know about window rattles. Before I open this thing up, I like to get some ideas from you guys. What do you guys think it's doing it. Oh, is the passanger side. Don't know if that makes a difference.
It is an 88 cab. w/ auto window. It rattles when I frn through the rough surface on the street. This is w/ the window up. If I crack it open a bit the rattle will go away. Now no matter what I do now, the rattle is there. It is driving me nuts. Is it a nightmare getting into this thing. What should I expect? Anyone? Thanks, Jeff. |

Several possibilities here....would recommend that you take off the door panel (not a big operation) and if the problem is not immediately visible, drive the car and have a passenger along for the ride to pinpoint the culprit.

Mine does the same thing on the drivers side. Have not gotten around to dealing with it yet.

Are all your seals intact?
My windows and frames were shimmying and shaking over every pebble in the road. I put new window felt and rubber, shakes were immediately gone.

i don't want to take over LOOK171's posting, but in MY case, the window and the vent frame moves in and out at times. I know I need to replace the seals (trying to find them on our host's site), but i think mine is more a problem with something behind the door panel. Somthing, a track or something, has to be loose.

So, who took off their door panel this weekend? I did, and found nothing loose. rollers and everything else is fine. When I shake or push the window in and out at the end near the corner, I can hear a little or cracking sound. Like metal hitting against metal. It is a cab, so no metal arounw the window. How important is the vapor barrier, the clear
plastic? I think the seals are no good. Any one replace the outer seals? It seem that there are 2 sets on the outside. How do you get the aluminum strip out? Do you need special tools for this seal? I did find out my speaker is torn real bad. thinking about replacing it with a new component sys that will fit in the stock hole. Any ideas? |

I have the same problem with my car. I found that one roller on the regulator is loose.

The clear plastic is very important if you want your door panel to stay dry.
There are a bunch of seal on these cars. Theres a "wipe" seal attached to a long peice of trim on the top of the door. The trim is glued into place and posistioned with simple fasteners. You should be able to just pull it up with some firm "love". I used silicone sealant to glue the trim back into place when I was done. There are two more seals in the top of the door, under the wipe, on each side of the glass. Finally, there is a frame seal that centers the glass into the window frame. A word of advise: don't attempt to slide the "wipe" seal onto the trim, you will not succeed. Use a small flat-head to press the seal into place. It will take some time, but its far easier than trying to slide that seal into place.

MIchiganmat, which is the frame seal? How do you get this lilttle guy off, or get to it. The long piece on top of the door, is that the piece that sit on the metal part of the door on the outside? You can pulll it off without taken out the simple fasteners? Thanks, Jeff

![]() #79 is the frame seal. Its glued into the channel and is easily pulled out. Pull out that quarter-window and frame to get to the seal itself, the frame is easily removed. #81 is the wiper rubber thats mounted in the door trim. The door trim is basically glued to the door. There are some simple fasteners which keep the trim in place more so than they hold it to the door. The glue does the work, the fasteners just keep the trim "centered". Some heat (via heat-gun) and a gentle prying motion with a flat-head screwdriver or spatula should pull that trim up from the door. (somebody please correct me if they have a better method here!)

The rattle inside the door is sometimes not the window but the rod connecting the door lock knob to the mechanism. The rod passes through a rubber bushing to prevent rattling against the door frame, but often this bushing rots or breaks with age and the rattle starts.
This is the part. ![]() ![]() I can assist anyone who has difficulty finding this part.

Rainy night here in Michigan, so perfect to see what my window rattle is.
Door panel was easy enough to come off. P.O. had some non-oem screw holding the map compartment on, but that is to be expected, I guess. Here is what I found on my 81 targa... the handle rod guide was popped out, as previously described. (Wish I had some on hand) My window also moves in and out (cross car when door is shut). I can move the top of the window in and out about 1/2 an inch. I don't expect this is normal. This was traced to slop of the nylon pieces that hold the window to the stationary track inside the door. I point them out in this first photo. If I can find them on this board, I'll order up new pieces. All I could find was the entire cross arm assy for $136. Pic #2... i also found a stress crack from the window movement. Interstingly enough, if I reach in and grab the bottom of the forward window track and wiggle it, the motion translates right to this spot. ![]() ![]() |
