When did the dream begin for you?
I got this in my email today from PORSCHE North America. It has a link to a great little video. Just thought I'd share it for those who are not on the distribution list.

I got that, too. The first thing I noticed was that the car the kid's drawing doesn't even look like a 911.

The title of the previous thread caught my eye and I started to reflect on where my passion for Porsches originated. So I thought it would be a great topic to answer just that… when did the dream begin for you?
For me, I can recall the day in vivid detail. I was six years old and had been fascinated with cars since my first Matchbox. It was a beautiful summer day with temperatures in the 70’s. A friend of the family stopped over and the conversation that ensued caught my attention. He was describing a new automobile that he purchased and asked if we wanted to go for a ride. As I stepped outside to see the car with the other family members, my heart started to race with excitement. In the driveway was the most beautiful automobile this child had ever laid eyes on. The smooth lines, the huge tail, and those incredible rear fender flares. The car… a 1979 Porsche 930 Turbo. The color was Guards Red and the interior made of black supple leather. After starring at the vehicle for quite some time, we all loaded into the red rocket ship that had landed in our driveway. Being the youngest, I was forced to sit in back. I laugh today because at age 6, I actually thought the rear seats where comfortable and space was adequate. Growing up, I came from a middle class family and we never had a lot of money. So going for a ride in a Porsche was something dreams where made of. As the key turned and the engine fired, the sound stirred my soul and the excitement mounted. As we drove onto the freeway onramp, I recall the driver telling us to hold on. Then it happened, the power came on like a freight train and we where catapulted onto the freeway. The next thing I knew, we where doing 120MPH and my back was pinned to the rear seat. Fantastic, I thought to myself. When I got home that day I recall telling my mom… one day I will own that car. She simply smiled and patted me on my head. Later in life, I actually pursued purchasing the exact vehicle I took a ride in on that glorious day. The original owner always promised me that if he ever decided to sell it, he would sell it to me. Unfortunately, his passion for Porsches and his love for the 930 never diminished. He still has the vehicle in his collection and it still looks like the day it first rolled into my dreams. True to my word, four years ago my dream came true and I acquired a 1985 930. The color… Guards Red and the interior, black leather. Suddenly, I’m 6 all over again but this time I’m behind the wheel. ![]() Coincidently, the day I picked up my 930 was also the day I met the girl of my dreams and my wife to be. See… dreams can come true. ![]() ![]() Last edited by TurboRuf; 06-18-2006 at 10:50 AM.. |

I was 8 years old (around 1982) I was riding the bus with my grandmother and grandfather (my parents didnt have a car) We were at a stop sign next to a brand new mustang and an older circa 1967 Porsche 911S with red fuch's was next to it. I said to my grandfather "Look, the guy with the little car is going to race the guy in the brand new mustang" my grandfather said "I hope the guy with the new car doesnt race for pinks"
Needles to say, the old 911S smoked the 6 banger mustang, ever since then I was intriuged with the P-Car!

I was 12 years old... and on an Italian magazine they were comparing a silver 959 to a red 288 GTO. The Ferrari did nothing for me.... I was hooked on the P-car.
Fast fwd 18 yrs... we have a little girl... can't get a 2 seater.... a 911 is the perfect family car. |

It was 1976, I was 13 years old on my paper route in San Francisco when I heard a rumble behind me and a woman laughing with joy. I moved to the curb as quick as possible and got a glimpse of a black 911 targa with a blondie in the passenger seat. I told myself that one day, I'm going to get to own a car like that and get me a blondie as well. Got a brunette instead and I own two 911s. Dreams do come true.

circa 1975...
Back in the mid 1970's my high school buddies and I all drove
VW bugs, but we all lusted after every 911 we saw... And we saw many living in So Cal, in particular in the Newport Beach/ Balboa Island area. Now after nearly a 30 year wait! a mid-life realization told me it's now or never. So a couple months back I realized the dream... ![]()

i was about 7 or 8 and lived on a street with a bunch of other kids. it was the days when kids could play outside, you know before kids were on milk cartons..
well i digress, there was this late 20 something guy that had a 911 and he was the coolest in our eyes. he would come out and throw the football around with us, skate board with us. he always pulled chicks too, seemed like a different one every weekend. he had a silver 911, early 70's, and from the 1st time i saw and heard it i was hooked. he would wash it and have like 10 of us helping. it was the coolest car on the block. what happened? well seems he knocked up one of his many chick overnight visitors and got married soon after. he had to sell the car, us kids were completly ruined. we hated his new bride for that. after it was gone he was still the coolest guy on the block,, but not as much as before. i was hooked on the 911 happly ever after. bet they are split up now and he wished he has that silver long hood back now. maybe he's here and will read this? maybe he got the car put on a milk carton to aid in his recovery efforts.....

I always liked motorcycles and been riding them for a while until brand new Saturn ran a red light and took me down in the middle of the intersection. Or took me up, I actually ended up on the roof of the car. At the same time, a friend of mine finished his project widebody SC with 3.6 in the back and took me for a ride. I thought WOW, that is the closest thing to the motorcycles on four wheels! Several months later, I bought my first Porsche, 85 Targa and couldn't be happier.
