Winter is coming here in Ontario (2 months away) and I thought I'd get an early start on the day dreaming.....
I bought an 81 SC Targa this year and I've done the exhaust backdating with the SSIs, but I'm day dreaming about even more power. Assuming your budget was $10,000 US$ would you do something else to the car like an engine swap or would you instead sell the SC and take car sale proceeds and the extra $10,000 and buy a 930 or a C2 or a C4....? I'm having a bit or buyers remorse now that I've had a taste of Germabn engineering excellence....I want more! |

Thats a personal decision. There are numerous members of both camps here.

enjoy it, learn how to drive it to the limit. you will want suspension goodies before engine most likely. if you are hell bent on more power get some wilder cams in there.

why do you want more power? What are you going to do with the car?

Keep the SC and put the money into some good upgrades. I sold my '97 C4s and bought an '86 Carrera. The C4s was a great car but it wasn't worth the extra money IMHO. I have just as much fun with my '86 as I did with my '97, sometimes I think even more. The older Porsches are classics, you own one - enjoy it!

If it is straight line performance your are after, the 930 is probably the way to go. The other option is a 3.6 in your SC...many have done it on this board but it will take your 10k.....then you'll need brakes, suspension etc.
If it were me, I'd spend your 2 months working on your SC....you are off to a good start with the SSI's. I'd upgrade the supension (torsions/sways/bushings/tie rods), adding some safety items (seat, harneses etc) and get another set of wheels/track tires. Then, I'd take to SC to the track (assuming you have one near by) and learn to drive the SC at the limit before going for more power. Just my 02 cents

Big ol' can of worms.
A ton of bang for the buck is a 3.2 - pretty easy & straightforward to install --- IF you truly want to keep your current car. My 3.6 Varioram conversion cost a b-load of $$$$$
