Thumbs up Scrappy's first kill.

Well, Scrappy got to go on her first official timed event this weekend. PCA Santa Barbara region held an autocross at Camarillo airport. It was a great turnout, with 90+ cars in attendance. There were GT3's, a RUF RGT, several ZO6's, a few Viper GTS's, half a dozen M3's, one of which was supercharged, and a wicked Datsun 510 on wide slicks.. In all, over half the field was non-Porsche.

The course was very technical, and the new asphalt was marbly and loose. It was a throttle-steer kind of day. Lots of fun!

I went along with fellow Pelicanite and co-worker Jeremy Cottrell, and a few of our client's. Rob Dickinson brought his beautiful Baham Yellow '69, and Leonard Skuro came along in his ultra-clean '73 S with 2.7RS motor.

Leonard scored a class win in the '73 S Targa

Jeremy drove his heavy pig '85 Carrera Targa to a near-miss second in class.

And Rob got second place in class to Scrappy.

But the big news was Scrappy getting Fast Time of Day!!! WooooHooooooo!!!!!!!!

The bonding has officially begun!

Second place over-all was a 914, and third went to the 510. The best part of the event was after the awards ceremony when people were asking me which car I was driving. You should've seen their faces when I pointed to Ol' Scrappy. Then they saw the 205/225 street tires on the skinny chrome wheels. They just couldn't quite process the whole thing. It was hysterical!

Old Porsches RULE!

EDIT: Special thanks to Steve Wong of "911Chips" for burning me a chip for the 3.2. It really woke up the throttle response, and made throttle steering the car around the cones much easier. Since I got FTD by only .02 seconds, I'd have to say I owe the win to Steve! Thanks Buddy!

Just Carrera Sport sways front and rear, a corner balance, and performance alignment. I also put Scruffy's old worn out Koni Sport shocks in the back until I can afford a suspension re-do.

I plan on doing a thread on upgrading the suspension with Elephant Racing parts and other tidbits once I gather all the stuff I need.

Thanks!

Yeah, I went into it just hoping I wouldn't be embarrassed. It's been 2 years since I last autocrossed, and that was with Scruffy. Scrappy is way less prepared.

I saw the 510 run, and didn't think I had a chance. Certainly not for FTD. I beat the 2nd place guy by .02 seconds!

The first part of the day, I kept overhearing guys talking about my car. One guy was telling another one about how the old ones were 4 cylinders. But then he saw the 911R badge, and said that it was probably a six.

One of the M3 guys asked if it was a straight six.

Great stuff!
Maybe you should put a 912 badge on. Just to rub it in

nice work bro! I knew that car was fast when I put her together. With your skills (being much better than mine) and some time that will be a sick car. She is just so damn light and with that 3.2 you can really suprise people.

Thanks man! Yeah, Jack Olsen has that saying on a T-shirt that he proudly wears to events that include a lot of Viper GTS and Corvette ZO6 guys. He'd make a fine "Evil"-Gruppe member, but has not yet sent in his application.

It was an awesome time!! When we weren't running like crazy chasing flying cones while wearing proper corner working attire, and got to drive. The most fun was the chicanes thrown in to slow us down on what I called the Mulsanne. Flicking a stock Carrera through those was the most fun of all. I had a blistering, class winning run going until a mentally ill, and terminally depressed cone decided he could no longer take it anymore. His life was not worth living, so he leapt onto the track in front of me, taking his own life and my great lap. This cone wanted someone else to suffer during his last moment here on earth. If the end, a great time was had by all, we will be there if force for another. I just hope that cone's relatives do not seek vengance on me for taking one of thier loved ones.

Thanks! I bet you've gotten a few TTOD's in your day, eh? This was my first.

I'd love to run the Alfa event, but money's tight right now. I may come out to watch though. I was all ready to run their race clinic, but it was the same weekend as German Auto Fest. I'm dying to run wheel-to-wheel with them. Good luck!

O.K., O.K., you're "Evil"-member #004. ( I think Jack Olsen is holding out for 007)

Congrats Tyson - proof one more time that the first upgrade most need to do is to the nut behind the wheel.

VERY COOL!

Hey, I don't even live near you guys but I can certainly appreciate your accomplishment.

I'm so green at it that I dubbed my car "Conekiller" after wreaking havoc on a couple of courses... you can see me in action in my avatar. I don't remember the exact position along the course where the photo was snapped, but it was likely either shortly before or shortly after a cone was permanently ground into the asphalt.

Lots to learn, plenty of fun.
