1988 Carerra running problems
Okay...this is kind of a weird problem. I have an '88 3.2L and everytime it gets wet, it runs horribly (e.g. acts like there is no timing, breaks up, hesitates, bucks, ect.). Also, at around 2400-2800rpm, the car does the same thing (even when not wet) Now, my first fix was to replace the cap, rotor, wires, and plugs...this did nothing. Then I tuned the a/f mixture...no change...has anyone seen this problem before...and if so what are other possible causes...I've heard something about the AFM being out-of wack...but I don't think it would get worse in the rain in that case...one other thing...i have a DME chip from Steve Wong, and I tried w/ that chip and the stock chip with no avail. So if anyone has any clue what could be the cause please let me know....thanks!

How did you tune the a/f?
Replace DME relay, Check grounds at the intake #1 manifold. Not sure about the 88, but there was an update to the Head Temp sensor when this corrodes it sent incorrect signals to the DME computer. Check intake gaskets for leaks. Is your O2 connected? Idle speed regulator working? When it is running, and idling it should be pulsing. I am sure there are a few other things to check, I just forget right now. Good luck.

Has the cylinder head temp sensor been updated to the "two wire" version? My 85 had the same symptoms until I upgraded the cht sensor.

Your 02 sensor might be shorting out when wet. Try wrapping it in heavy foil and see if that helps.

I had the same prob on my 88. I replaced the plugs, wires, cap and rotor and it went away. I did not want to replace them one at a time to find out which one was the problem so i don't know which fixed it but it went away for good.
Good Luck

pop the cap next time it gets wet and see if it's lined with water. typical problem on 3.2s.

Hint: You might want to seal the rim of your distibutor cap with bead of Ultra Gray sealant before setting it on the distributor to prevent water from getting inside in the future.
