What's wrong with the factory gauge? If you want numbers, you can backdate to the early sender/gauge.

I guess I need to know what temps the stick markers stand for. Which one is 180?

Maybe I'll be the first to respond here, but if you take a flashlight and look real closesly at the inside of the gauge you will see the temp designations written on the gauge. It is not visible without holding your head half sideways with the light, so check it out!

Do what "JackOlsen" suggested. Get a replacement face. Cheap, easy, and effective update.

It's not just a replacement face it' a replacement gauge. Actually the old style gauge w/ a matching sender. They both must be replaced.

Yes, he's correct.

(You only need to replace the internals and sender, not the faceplate or trim ring.)

I just did this about a month ago. One of the best upgrages I have done to the car. And it is under $100!

Noithing wrong with the itty bitty VDO gauges...put them in a location that can be seen at a quick glance. The one in the stock location is not really that handy...for me.

Do not do this while driving. Ask me how I know.

Kidding!

The search button is your friend.....

I posted this several times for mid-80's gauges, this is accurate for your '89:

- lowest white block 60 degC ( 140F)
- next up white mark, 90 degC ( 194F)
- next white up, 120 degC ( 248 degF)
- lower part of next up red block, 150 degC ( 302F)

So...you can approximate this easily as 150/200/250/300

And this is even cheaper ( "zero") than the "best" $ spent by others !

Agreed, but have you seen the late SC temp gages? They are a joke. No usefull lines on them, and the red zone starts at 302F, which I feel is WAY too hot. Here is a (bad) pic of the one that was in my car:

I qualified my answer for which cars this recommendation applies to....

The original poster has an 89..so my answer applies to him..

Earlier SC's.....different gauge / different problem.....

But I'm sure some enterprising soul can come up with a similar rule-of-thumb answer for SC's ..
