brake upgrade.

Ive read the old posts, ive searched high and low but just a simple question for the masses with more knowledge than i. My father has a 74 911S and wants to upgrade the brakes. He wants to keep his 15 inch fuchs on the car as well. So what do I need to get him for xmas to bolt on a set of 930 turbo calipers with floating hat rotors??? Can I swap in newer struts with the larger bolt spacing and bolt the calipers right up? Do i need to keep the same shocks and struts and use adapters? I plan on changing the MC to a larger one so the issue is the bolt pattern on the front and rear.

Take a look at the VCI website. Be prepared to spend money. I believe your dad has the 3 inch bolt holes on that 74. The easiest upgrade would be the Carrera wide caliper upgrade with Carrera rotors (with 3.5 inch spacing), but if you want the 930, VCI should be able to maching there 930 caliper adapter for a 3 inch spacing.

74S should have 3.5" spacing.
It should also have the early aluminum S calipers.
Perhaps he should look at having these rebuilt (SS pistons) as they were good enough to come on early Turbo cars.
Take a front wheel off and have a quick measure.

thanks guys, I measured the bolt pattern, 3.5 inches, the car is a 911S orginially. He (dad) just wants bigger more badass brakes and me being the good son who get to drive the car now and then will do it for him. The reason for this is he wants to upgrade the front shocks to bilstein sports to match the sports in the rear and the elephant racing bushings(polybronze). Can I just get some bilstein sport shocks for the front with 3.5 inch brake spacing, bolt on 930 calipers and rotors and be ok??

What's up, Ryder? Do any trick-or-treating? Pops has got all he needs, so he can save some bucks there. Better pads might help. If your car's a true S, yes, you have 3.5 spacing, hence bigger rotors. Remember too, your car is a lot lighter than stock, so unless you're racing it all the time, you've probably have a good setup right now. Stickier tires will make a difference too.

Now go draw something.

No dave, didnt do any trick or treating. Big art center party last night, I went as Steve Mcqueen and actually met his son today at Fontana, Chad. So far dad's car is an original S car. 1974, 911S, 1978 SC 3.0 engine with 20/21 cams, SSI heat exchangers and custom TRE/Tyson 2 in 2 out design. Elephant racing polybronze bushings front and rear, bilstein sports rear, stock fronts, stock front Tbars, larger rear Tbars, RS america door panels and carpet, no ac, custom stereo, rennline smugglers box battery kit with lighter optima battery, "lightened" wiring harness, sparco evo 2 seats with sliders, soon to remove passenger side slider. custom by me rear quarter and door windows in acrylic with R style window pulls. Last time car was weighed was with AC and stock battery position at 2385 pounds. Now without ac im guessing slightly under 2300 and when I rip out the window cranks and replace windows with acrylic, then front windshield with 964 glass and mount it better be under 2300.

Dad wants better brakes before I can start building a new motor for him hehehehehe. Dave your gonna love it!!! So 930 calipers with floating hat rotors, bigger MC and bilstein sports up front. Then im going to build a 3.5 off a 3.2 with Steve weiner;s ITB kit with DTA ecu and twin plug. Then I need to sell my jetta, get a 69-75 non sunroof coupe, pop his old 3.0 in with carbs and start hot rodding that.

Sound like a plan to you????????? He is hell bent on getting bigger rotors and more badass calipers, I already tried the different pads and bigger MC route trust me. I want more money to spend on his new motor.

Oh and Dave, about drawing, I am redesigning the Chrysler 300C as a two door to compete against the new 6 series, also a porsche to compete against the McLaren F! (the ultimate road car I dont care what anyone says) a cafe racer kit bike with the same geometry as a street bike but better looking and a fuel cell powered commuter car that looks good. So I am staying busy with that. Hope to see you soon buddy.

The rotors aren't thicker for the 3.5 spaced calipers, if it's a vented rotor '69-'83 they're 20mm.

You can ,but shouldn't, just bolt on front rotors and calipers. You need to do f/r and m/c all at the same time
