Who makes the best ducktails?

I just acquired a 1987 Carrera Targa that looks too plain for my tastes. I was thinking of going with Carrera side stripes a ductail and a front chin spoiler. My question is, who makes the highest quality ducktails? Any help is much appreciated.

MAShaw from what I've heard.

Damon (series900) on this board will be able to offer up an excellent one next spring - he just acquired an original OEM ducktail to make a pattern from.

Hey Jonathan, you certainly have good taste. I've got one from GT-Racing that I think fits quite well. The Targa is an odd shape. Coupes are so beautiful with 2 or 3 lines that really flow together, whereas Targas kill that C-pillar blend.

Just as you have thought, a ducktail adds a lot to the Targa shape. My opinion is that since the car is somewhat stubby to begin with, go all out. I love my combination of tail and chunky 17" Cup IIs to really enhance the blocky shape.

Pic here is from Saturday, I just switched over to polished IIs with Victoracers (god these are fun!) versus stardard painted/coated.

Shaun,
Nice car!! Exactly what I am looking for except I figured the carrera stripes will add a bit more funkiness.

Post some pics of your car, we'd love to see it.

thanks for the compliments, but, uhh, nice is subjective. You won't find much an interior in the car, and the left F fender is a different red than the rest of the car, but it's fast, handles incredibly, and best of all, at 235K miles, is probably the most reliable car I've ever had.

If you want to go the Cup II route, I've got an extra set.

Try "Made by Hand" in Florida. They use a steel frame and glass the tail on.

Cool

I happen to own two duck tails. I have a factory one mounted on a 911E. The fit is pretty bad. The upper corners fit well. The lower corners don't fit as well. They aren't going to be adjusted out either. It's going to take some fiberglass work to do that.

The copy fits better. The upper lip of the spoiler is not a thin or as rounded as the factory one. Overall the spoiler itself is a little more "squared off" than the factory tail. It is slightly heavier than the factory one. This stems from the fact that the glass is a little thicker and has a couple of reinforcement ribs.

I like the looks of both of them on a car. If I were doing it, I would go for the better fit. Most people looking at the car wouldn't know that it was a copy. They would comment however on the fit.

Good luck.

Most of the all-glass ducktails have a fit that ranges from poor to hideous. If I wanted a really good looking ducktail, I'd glass the spoiler onto a steel lid. I think that is what the factory did (except it was an AL lid).

bought this 73T with the duck tail, it's not a good fit at the top and the underside edges are a mess; looking for an original lid or a better fit

NO fiberglass part is going to go on and be perfect from the get go. They all need to be "massaged". The extent of massaging depends on how you want the part to look, as well as the initial fit to start. Most aftermarket tails will be funky on the top where the deck meets the body. There are several reasons for this... Most of the tails have sufficient glass/resin to allow a significant amount of sanding to "adjust" for any mold issues. Sometimes they need to be fixed using duraglass.

MAshaw does nice stuff. GT Racing is just as good, but some might disagree... All of my glass is GT Racing and have good and not so good fit issues. Typical for fiberglass.
