My oil temp guage on my 3.6 conversion is barely moving up the dial. Do I need to match the sending unit with the gauge. In other words do I need to change out the stock 3.6 sending unit with one that matches my gauge or the original engine in my car.
I have a 95 993 non vram engine and my car is a 76 carrera 3.0 with the guage reading of 0 to 150 in hash marks btw is that in C or Ferenheight degrees or what

I'm pretty sure the answer is yes. My new sender and old gauge were mismatched, originally, giving me falsely cool readings.

Will the sender for my old 3.0 bolt onto the 993 3.6?

There are only 2 temperature sensors 1974-76 or 1977-89. Yes, the older one bolts on to the 993 and yes, it will then read correctly. Thats what I did for both the 964 and 993 in my '76 C3

Having the same situation on my 3.6 conversion. Gets off the peg but about a 1/4 inch short of the lowest mark.
How difficult is the sending unit to get to on the engine? Other option is to change the temp unit on the gauge with a different unit but not sure which one would be cheaper. JoeA

Wil,
The fun part is that Bill's engine is in my car in AZ and he is in New York at the same time! Figure that out! ![]() Bet his smugglers compartment is really full now! JoeA

Hmmmm, mine was a Timmins special and I did not need to change it out. "I" would run it to up for 15 minutes and shoot the oil tank and/or at the dip stick with a hand held pyrometer.
You MIGHT have a thermostat that is stuck OPEN not allowing it to get to operating temp....dangerous for oil coolers....cold heavy oil can bust them open.

Mike,
Checked mine and its getting warm, not hot and thermostat is opening and getting to the cooler in front. Cannot confirm just how hot its getting so am not going to drive it until I get the sensor question worked out. Found out that ST took the sensor out of the engine when Bill had him pull it out of his car to sent it to me. He stuck something else in the hole without telling me it had been changed and it appears that its the wrong type sensor because its way low. (added to the growing list of things that were cocked up between the time it was dropped off and shipped) Of course I installed the engine thinking life was good and now it does not work! Just found out that the sensor is in the back of the engine and just forking wonderful to get to... hope ST does not ever make it to AZ ... if you know what I mean! JoeA

Joe, We clearly layed out what would be on/with the engine, check your e-mails. the temp sensor was on the list.
Anyhoo a partial drop is needed, just the rear and lower a few inches. Here is a pic of what's back there, between the vacuum can and the breather hose, the 993 is sligtly different but not much ![]()

Bill,
Not mad at you, just keep finding things that happened between the time when you dropped the car off at his shop to get the engine removed and I got the motor that a good mechanic would have mentioned to me as a customer. He was not interested in talking to me as I did not "buy his kit" from him. I reminded him that I was buying lots of parts from him as well as your engine and that made it so you had to buy a kit from him, so then he was a bit more talkative but there were several things that he did or found with the engine that he "forgot" to tell me, and just shipped it out and let me find it on my own. He is supposed to be a professional and this is not the way a pro works. Will deal with it but had I known that I needed to switch out the temp sensor I sure would have done it while the engine was out and it was easy to get to. Considering that our agreement on the engine was in January and I finally got the engine in May (not your fault at all BTW) knowing all the minor details of a temp sensor had been changed got lost. Thanks for the photo and I will either drop the engine and change the sensor or buy a different gauge unit and put that in. At least its running! Thx, Joe
