New Ducktail from TRG...I like it!

It does... I don't know why we all insist on believing it doesn't. If anybody is the "manufacturer" it is Getty. I know for a fact that GT Racing sources at least some of their products from Getty... Molds required to do this work are crazy big and expensive. One thing about GT Racing, whomever "builds" their stuff it has their logo on it/in it. They are the only FG parts that I have seen with logos. So Hank has these made "for him"...

Wait a minute, I believe everything that I read here ( ), are you telling me that MA Shaw does NOT make his own ducktails? Everything I every believed to be true up til this point in time regarding MA Shaw must be a lie? Oh well, life goes on.

Edit: Oh, efhughes3, good luck with the fit. It doesn't matter how little or great the fitment work will be, in the end, it will be well worth it!

Sorry Scott, Ma Shaw... GT... HRE etc... all source from Getty... I've seen invoices... No big secret. But overall it shows that, again FG is FG. Some fit great, some not so great, mistakes are made and others are perfect. You never know. I do think that some of the companies have some say so as to how the products they represent get finished/handled, possibly with some "custom" tuning features. For instance, GT Racing hoods etc come with bolts and bonded inserts, as well as a few other reinforcements etc... Other "identical" parts I've seen were different. So the confusion continues.

I was being a little facetious, but it is true, I always thought MA Shaw did his own work. Maybe I learned something new today? I've also read sooooo many threads about ducks, and I have come to one undeniable, irrefutable conclusion....I don't know which one is best. Every single company has had some scrutiny, so I guess it is a gamble on any fiberglass aftermarket product (yes, including bumpers). But, ducktails look cool!

I think that the manufacturer(s) of these FG parts use whatever color gelcoat they happen to have around. I seem to remember someone who makes these telling me this when I inquired about the whole "color ID" thing. It is so inconsequential to them that when they run out of white some day they use black/grey/etc....


FWIW, I had a grey one that seemed to be high quality, but I never mounted it and can't remember who bought it around here.

Mike Shaw may not make his own glass but at least he backs up what he sells. TRG does neither from my experience.

FWIW from a guy who has laid up 1000s of parts, black get coat is much easier to see air down in the lamination. The mold itself will be a different color than the preferred gel coat so that the gel coat applicator can see how it's covering when spraying. I liked red molds because I could spray black, white or grey primer gel in them. White is the worst color to laminate against. You can't see what you would otherwise see when laying up the part. Chopper gun or hand lay, it's the same story.

Speaking of grey, I don't know why more parts aren't fabraicted with primer gel. It's perfect for blocking out the part for painting.

If they all come from the same guy, why not buy from him,....wouldn't he have a more vested interest and theoretically more room to actually do something to rectify problems?

I have in the past talked with Gary Kempton, who apparently makes a ducktail like the original factory one...metal frame with fibreglas spoiler. Price (a while ago) was $950, but then again, the metal frame ought to make the fit a bit better, not to speak of making it more stiff and likely less prone to cracking.

Anyone have experience with Gary (Made by Hand)?

The car was special ordered originally with the special color and the brightwork. I've got all "bright" trim around the windows, the headlights and the door handles in addition to the Targa bar.

I can guarantee you that he did not replace the bar. That's about as easy as replacing the foundation on your house.
