SUB-FRAME CONNECTOR ON A 911
Has anyone welded sub-frame connectors onto their 911?
I was talking to some racer dudes and they've all done it. Perhaps their cars need it and not our 911. So I was at my mechanics shop and he had an NSX on the lift and I took a picture of how they did it. Basically, they welded two bars along the sides then and "X" to connect them. Coupes shouldn't need it if they have a 6-or-more point cage. I could see it benefiting a car that doesn't have a cage ... but not as good a job as a cage could do.
Targa's and Cab's would benefit the most.

I think usually when they add a full cage they add bracing sorta like that but inside the car not outside. It seems the full cage like we might buy ready made is not as extensive as what ends up in a real racecar.

I haven't heard of Porsche adding additional bracing to a chassis - other than adding more tubes here and there to the cage. Most early cages were Al to save weight ... that would never fly with today's racing regs.
A fair amount of chassis stiffness can be had by stitch welding the bodypanel edges ... ie. not relying on the spotwelds alone. But that is more for full-prep race cars. Would also make panel replacement fun ... I like the X underbody connectors as long as the car isn't too low already. You could probably talk Thom into trying it ![]()

Was at Patrick Motorsports a while ago and they welded each and every seam, not just the spot welding. Asked about it and they said that it really stiffened up the car and did not add that much weight. Joe A
