911 youngster

Just thought Id introduce myself and my new project car (still need to buy it) Im 17 and dont have a whole lot of mechanical experiance. But Im close friends with many shop owners and my dad and his friends are all P-car enthusiasts so I think I can learn pretty quick. Anyway I just thought Id say hello and let you guys know that there are a few young guys out there that are into the classic Porsches and understand the mystique of a 72 Rs on the track. Meanwhile most kids my age are into spinning chrome wheels and hondas with big wings on the back. My dad having countless books about all the 70's Porsche racing cars and the RSR project car hes been building probably helped that a bit. Maybe it was playing the racing games while sitting in the 67 sport seats when I was about 8 that did it.........
Anyway without further ado.....the car

The first problem with the car Im going to address is that theres nothing underneath the decklid. Heh.... forgot to mention that its just a roller. Hence why its become a winter project

Very nice car. I too am young (19) and naturally drawn to the allure of the air cooled flat six...its seems we have something in common. Im the only kid I know that actually knows what heal-toe downshifting is. Where are you located? and Is that a RS style rear spoiler? Do you have other pictures of the car? I would love to see them.

I'm old and cranky, so I'll correct you: there was a 73 RS (Actually a 73 Carrera RS). In 1972 there were only T's, E's and S's.

Then again, my vanity plate says "1972 RSR" which is a nonexistent model, as well.

Nice tub. What year is it, and are they steel or glass flares?

Well hey at least your car had a motor (I assume). Its a 71, steel flares. Im not completely sure on the spoiler isnt it just a mid-late 80's Turbo wing? Anyway I stand corrected 73....

And as you can see its in much better condition then the one in Japan on ebay right now.....it recently sold for 75k I believe.
Anyway heres a picture of the current track car (whenever Dad is nice enough to let me drive it)

PorscheGuy79...I learned how to heel and toe a few months ago and i find it to be so much harder in the 911 than in my daily driver (325Is). Anyways much more of a challenge than hitting a nitrous button like most kids are age. And Im from Tulsa, OK

Hi GpWannaB,
I am also young (15.5). I am probably the youngest here. I have a 1976 911 cabriolet with a 1983 look conversion made by the previous owner and a 3.0 engine. I am making improvements, and learning how to drive it with the help of my dad.
Congratulations on your first car bieng a Porsche! Kids at my school have a lot of run-down looking 80's Volvos and custom Toyotas. My IM is "PorscheownerMatt" if you ever want to chat. Enjoy the car! Post some more pics if you can .

Hey Gp,

Welcome! Nice car! Good luck with giving it a strong heartbeat, that's the fun part! DIY makes the driving all the more satisfying.

Welcome to the "brotherhood" Glad to see you turned out to be a fine young man with your head in the right place.

Your dad did a great job of raising you!

I too have raised my children under a strict regimine of P car pablum! And now they too are bitten by the bug.

Good Luck with all your endeavours.

Guys,

Before you got your licenses, what kind of gear-head/motor-sports did you and your parents do? When did you start (age?) How much did you do together?

This thread is the answer to MRM’s original question on:
Go cart racing and 911s
Please post your “growing up” experiences for MRM and his son Alex’s benefit. Did you race karts or other?

It looks like you guys have some cool projects to work on.

Best,
Grady

I'm a youngster (relatively speaking) on the board myself, so welcome.

I'm curious though - you've covered my three main (only?) lines of thought in your quote. Having puzzled over it for a minute, I'm wondering which moment you're referring to, because I'd like to experience it myself.

Nice car by the way.

And I thought I was young on this board. At 25, I'm starting to feel old - but I'm sure someone will correct me on that (ha,ha). As the 356 guys say, "keep the faith".

962, looks like you've got a nice assortment of 2 wheelers (bikes I mean). I'm always looking for riding partners. I'm on a Kona Kula right now, with 2 sets of wheels(street and dirt), and am actively trying to "raise funds" for an Italian road bike.

PM me if you ever want to hit the trails or a mountain pass.

How many on this Forum are under 20? Under 25?

The “911 Youngster” is the future of Porsche. In 1959 I first laid my hands on a Porsche (RSK) at age 15 or so. I bought my first new 911 at age 23. Today any enterprising teen can find and slowly properly rejuvenate an early 911, 914, or other.

Best,
Grady
