Steering wheel removal?
How do you remove the steering wheel in a 1978sc. I just purchased a used momo steering wheel and would like to install it.

If it's like my 84, you remove the horn pad first by simply (carefully) pulling it off. Then, there's a large nut that holds the wheel in place (I forget the exact size). Firmly grab on to the wheel, and use either a deep socket or a socket on an extension, and loosen the nut. The wheel should come right off. Whatever you do, DO NOT use a Club or similar wheel locking device to hold the wheel. While you've got the wheel off, you might consider replacing the steering column bushing if you have play in the wheel. There's a tech article on how to do it. It's a very easy job.
Good luck.

Why wouldn't you use a club? I've never used one, I just hold the wheel firmly, then loosen the nut.
What you definitely don't want to do is use the steering column lock. When removing the wheel, put the key in the ignition so the wheel can turn if needed.

I did as crash mentioned above, only I used an impact. That way, it was easier to hold the wheel from turning. The warning that I read was not to use the wheel in the fully left or fully right position to hold it in place. I read that it could damage your steering rack? Wayne's book mentions using the wheel lock/club idea.....impact is easier. I believe my steering wheel nut was 27mm.
Good luck -Chris

yep, it's 27mm, and about 36 lb/ft of torque when you put it back on. I used a 27mm head and a 4 inch extension on my breaker, with someone holding the wheel. I wouldn't use a club, too much potential for damage (wheel, windshield, etc.)

After removing the old steering wheel, there's a "C" washer attached to the steering column that *may* need removal. On my MOMO, i didn't need to remove this washer, but to mount my 930S wheel, the washer needs to be removed, otherwise the steering wheel will not mount flush. Also, on the accordian-like adaptor, there's a metal nub protruding from one end of the adaptor. This nub needs to be at the 9o'clock position when you put the adaptor on. The nub end of the adaptor goes on first. This nub is the turn signal cancelling device. My MOMO Monte Carlo wheel is for sale, includes adaptor and Porsche crest horn button. $148. mike '86 coupe |
