Were you expecting them to go up? Nearly a quarter of a million "911's" have been made; they are not particularly rare. Most will depreciate like any other car, just perhaps at a slower rate and with a higher final plateau price. What is the newest SC now, 21+ years old? Buy one to drive and tinker with, not as an "investment". Cheers, Jim

I've been tracking a couple and $12-13k seems like the going rate!

If you put a $4000 paint job on it, polish the Fuchs and Simple Green the wheel wells...maybe powder coat the A-arms...
That should add $1000....maybe..
And whatever you do don't drive it. especially not in the snow or within 100 miles of an ocean where the evaporative effects of salt could get to it.

Great! The ranks of PCA G-stock will swell with new SC's, used as Dr. Porsche intended, for racing!

Like any older, desireable model of car I think with time, the SC will contiue to be in shroter ans shorter supply. Try finding a nice, clean 2 door 510 these days. I think Datsun / Nissan built as many or more of them over a longer period, but after a certain point the stockpile just seemed to dry up.

I know its a bit of an apples and oranges situation comparing the SC to a 510, but they both have a certain appeal to a specific buyer and it just follows that as age, accidents, racing, etc take their toll, SCs (nice, daily drivers) will soon be hard to find.

Just my $.02

yeah but Dautsun 510's rust so fast you can hear it happening! I can't tell you how many old 510's I've seen in perfect running order that look like a stiff breeze might blow what's left of the body into the next county.

If you look at the red book it shows on average of 9000 911s made per year. That really is not that many. Prices are pretty stable and have been for a while. Who knows how nice these 7500 dollar cars are? they could have no history or hacked pieces of junk or a rush sale as many 1st time porsche owners do. Those people that rush sale are those that get in over there head buying a 20 year old car with a loan and then figure out that they can't afford to maintain them for every day use and then fire sale. It is very common. As far as how many there are out there I would say only a hand full. I live in wiscaonsin and if I see 30-50 porsches in a year I am very lucky and that includes boxters. I really don't think the market will drop on these cars 10,000 is a good level line for them and if you find a perfect example in wisconsin you would spend 15,000-17,000. Now remember that here these cars are stored winters and only driven 6 months out of the year . My point is well not sure but anyhow don't fret it will be ok.

I say enjoy the low prices while you can. They will climb sharply as fewer good examples are available and more enthusiasts discover how absolutely amazing these cars are.

Hell, buy two!

I "store" mine in the same place in the garage all year and drive it 12mos in WI. It never rusted from "evaporative" salt for the five years I had it in Hawaii either.
I guess it must be "special factory galvanizing" that no one else got????
No driving if it is really slushy as the handling is really terrible but nice snow pack....now that is FUN!!!!

I don't think prices are taking a dip at all on SCs.

What is happening is the cars are getting old, so the price VARIANCE between cars is getting wider. Kind of like 914s have been for years now. A 73/74 2.0 can cost you $1500 or $15000, and be a steal at EITHER price, depending on the condition of the car.

Same for SCs now. These are getting really old, and there is a huge variance in condition amongst the cars. And, a huge variance in price.

What happens, though, is that the nice examples start to get fewer and further between. So the prices for the top cars starts to go up (that has been happening with 914s for at least the past 5 years now - a steady and sometime steep increase in the price for very nice examples).

On the flip side, prices for the dogs will go lower, because they just keep getting "doggier" as time goes on.

SCs will follow this trend, Carreras will follow.

tsuter.

You are the exception to the rule. Very few peolpe drive their porsches in the winter. But truth be told not many have turbo SCs either(jealous me)

prices coming down is a good thing, unless you think your car is an investment and you want to sell it for a profit, which will never happen.

Speaking of SCs, someone just got an amazing deal on eBay:

1983 Cab

29,186 original miles for only $9,999. New paint, new uninstalled top. Sure it will need some work but $10K?

Condition really matters! There are fewer and fewer "excellent" copies out there. The CPI (cars of particular interest) showed a $3k increase for a 79 SC in "exc" cond. All other conditions showed a depreciation...

oh yeah, the prices jumped from $19.5k to about $21.5k - that's retail and, as we know, on the high side. It is a benchmark nonetheless.

CPI - cars of particular interest. Used for "collectibles"...basically, it's the blue book for certain cars (only it's called the "black book")

here's a link: http://www.blackbookusa.com/cpi.asp

I don't think you can consider an SC a collectible. The price will depend on the demand. I expect them to fall fairly slowly in value. An early S will do better. RSs, 550s and the really rare Porsches will go up, but that's about it.
