A/C Switch Bypass - Ideas?

Well, I've now twice buggered-up that funky electro-mechanical temperature control diaphragm "switch" for the A/C while trying to install it. So, I'm considering just bypassing the darned thing.

Since the A/C, even with upgrades, is unlikely to actually produce more cold than I want, I really don't care about the temperature control aspect of the thing. So I was thinking, why not just install a switch (maybe a rotary switch with the stock knob mounted on it). I could then stick a thermostatic switch at about 40 degrees in the evaporator core so I don't freeze the evaporator. Any ideas? Anyone know where I can get a closed-above-40 thermostatic switch?

My switch was also buggered up, so I tried putting a simple on-off switch in like you suggested. The problem I encountered was the evaporator would freeze up.

I ended up finding a generic switch identical to my original, but with a little longer capillary tube for around $50.

Exactly my concern, which is why I would use an electrical switch in the evaporator that would shut off the A/C at about 40 F.

Where did you find your replacement switch?

I found it at an automotive A/C shop. I think it was made for an RV air conditioner.
