Is the windshield trim necessary?

I did a search and there are some folks that are not using the aluminum trim piece with their windshields. Is this a functional piece or merely trim? I need to refurbish mine and wonder if I can drive without it for extended periods. Who here doesn't use the trim?

I wondered the same thing, about the trim for all the windows. Mine would be removed for cosmetic reasons though. In an unrelated thread a while back someone posted pics of their car with no trim on any windows. If you look at the cross section of the window seal there is just a channel for the trim to press into, so I assume it's ok.

No personal experience...but the trim insert ( either stock metal or even a solid vinyl tube substitute) helps the rubber trim to hold fast on the windshield as well as on the car itself.....seems necessary to me.

Been running my '68 with no trim since replacing the windshield and seal with no noticeable difference in noise, etc., course I don't drive it in the rain on purpose either.

Here is a question then. Could the void left from removal of the trim piece be filled with lets say a thin piece of unobtrusive metal or cord to maintain the integrity of the fit? It seems that the trim is used to supply a "filler" in the seal gap that maintains pressure on the windshield. That could just as easily be accomplished with something else, if necessary at all. Is my logic off here?

glass

will, is correct about the vinyl or rubber tubing. i had a new windshield installed and the glass installer replaced the trim with solid black vinyl tubing to get the proper expansion of the seal. i would estimate that it was maybe3/16th in diamter. i also had this done to the rear glass. to date it has worked well in my cars.

Any ideas where to get the tubing? Do you think maybe a solid core black wire work as well? Now that I am considering this, cosmetically it would look good without the trim, as long as it is safe.

glass installation

the glass installer had this with him and seemed quite familiar with this process. i would start with a glass shop and enquire of them..should be easy to find the proper material...just make sure of the size and my suggestion was just an estimate.

That would ruin your day! Will- good point about the expansion of the seal, I never thought of that. I'm thinking about the cord that's used in vinyl screens, I'll try to put some in the side window to see if it is thick enough.

Black plastic tubing for air/water lines on various equipment can be found probably at a home depot or such.

I was just taking front and back trim off the other day (prepping for paint). I was wondering the same thing. I am glad someone brought this topic up.

Bob and Alan,
Since both of you are running sans trim how dows it look? Any pics? Did you guys put anything in the channel at all?

If you don't like the silvery color, just sand it and paint or anodize black.

If it stretches the rubber "lips" then a plastic piece may not work right and metal could be needed. Dunno, but it's not an experiment I would do on my car, and I wouldn't want to be near yours if you do it....

That's why I was thinking that a solid core wire might work better since it will not flex. The fit must not be too tight, my trim pulled out VERY easily, it didn't even deform the metal. It was painted before by the PO and the paint was flaking off. It looked horrible. I am hoping to get a powder coating system from Santa Claus and will tackle the refurbish then.
