Has anyone tried one of these engine stand adapters instead of a yoke?

Pelican sells these as well as the "regular" yokes. This is about $147 vs. $313 for the yoke. This bar bolts up to the 4 adjustable arms you typically have with an engine stand. Has anyone used one? If so, are there any clearance issues or anything that hinders work on the motor?

This is what he said, "I am using the middle income version, I bought just the ring part, works ok, I can see the benefit of the full yoke, it is hard to get at the end of the motor with the clearance provided buy this set up."

I'd buy the Porsche-specific yoke, and then sell it to a fellow Pelican for $200 once the engine was rebuilt. That's a win-win, and you'll have the proper tool for the job for as long as you need it to rebuild the engine. My $.02.

Scott: I may go this route, but I've given the rebuild budget to the wife (which was approved!!), and am now looking for ways to stretch it. It may be the same either way, as each piece could be resold.

I used one with no problems. And I am a rookie. Also was on a $ 50 engine stand from harbor freight. worked Great.

Maybe I am too cheap/dumb to know better, but I continue using a universal engine stand from Kragen. After a very minor adjustment, it all lined up.

I will add to my original comments now that I have had it in use a little longer, works great, still kind of wish I had the extra clearance. One of the other driving factors for me was that once I am done, the ring will store away very easily, the yoke is a big thing, I have enough big things in the garage already, I did not need to add another. I would have considered the buy and sell of a proper yoke, but I expect I will be doing this again sometime so wanted to keep the tooling.

I have a three car garage, and after you put three cars in it, four 915s lying around, two rolling tool boxes (one metric one SAE), 10 ton press, drill press, ....well you get the picture, the full yoke was one more thing I did not need to add to the where am I going to keep this list.

I will post more pictures on my website in a few days and will keep adding to it as I rebuild so you can get a better feel for the ring in use. I have pull off the case half and swapped them a few times and it makes life pretty slick for that, much easier thatn I would imagine not having it.

To get extra clearance for clutch and flywheel, all you would have to do is add some spacers between the ring and the engine stand head. You could cut some short pices of pipe, 1"-2" and use longer bolts to go throught the head tubes to the adpter ring.
