Value of running 3.0 core?

Tonight while removing the heat exchangers to fit my early exchangers and sport muffler for the 78', I found I have burnt a valve on the exhaust side of cylinder #1.

Since I know about the bad valve, I would want to be honest with whomever bought it, that at the minumum it would need a top end re-build.

So what do you think the value would be?

Edit 12-19-2004: I don't have a burnt valve. It was just a carbon trail that had formed. Once I poked around with a dental pick, I was able to scratch tright through it. Man what a relief! No I can concentrate on fixing the vacumn leaks, and oil leaks.

I sold a core rebuildable core that was still running and driveable a few years back for $1500 including CIS and stock exhaust. It had a bad leakdown on 1 cylinder, but I sold it before I found out whether it was valves or rings. I would have bought it back 6 months ago for even money if I had the chance.

You can always pick your price a little on the high side and then keep lowering it until it goes. I've seen asking prices in the $2500-$3000 range for similar motors, but I've seen them stick around a while without getting sold. Free market will get the parts gone and money in your pocket, though maybe not as much as you'd like.

To me personally it would be worth either a Colt Sporter AR-15 or Springfield M1A in even trade assuming it was legal to transfer to a California resident through an FFL dealer.

Good luck. You might get more out of Ebay than from the cheapskates like me that frequent Pelican Parts.

Unfortunatley they are not legal in to own in CA anymore, or I might be inclined.

Tom you're right, I need to just re-build it. Do you have an engine stand, or the Porsche engine adapter? The only problem is I'm out of money with building the shop this last year. So I'm not going to start untill the end of February. No pics yet.

I personally think that its worth about $1500, but only because that is what I am looking to spend for a rebuildable core. If you are going to replace that engine, PM and we can talk.

I have seen rebuldable engines from $1k - $5k+, all in running but needing work condition. I am not sure why the old, worn 3.0 and 3.2 are so expensive.

I agree, a rebuildable 3.0 is worth about $1500. Someone will have to spend a good chunk of money to rebuild it, so a price above that and one might as well find a useable running 3.2 or 3.0. I bought a resealed 3.0 with new 993 headstuds a few years ago for $3400! It's still ticking and doesn't burn any oil. Has a good punk and gooes like stink...

Thanks Jamie. I'm not ready to part with it yet. I'm just gathering info and trying to make a plan. Right now my considerations are:

Sell car
part car out
re-build 3.0
Buy used 3.0, 3.2, or 3.6 and sell core 3.0
or store car for 6 months or longer untill I know exactly what I want to do.

Tom the motor has 185,000 miles on it.

No, unfortunately I don't. I borrowed one the one I used on my rebuild.

The only problem is I'm out of money with building the shop this last year.

That makes things more difficult, although the teardown part is free.
