Plymoth - here's the trick for long distance....ask the owner if you can call his mechanic and get the low down on the car. If he balks, keep looking, if he gives some excuse, keep looking, if he says he does all the work himself, ask him to fax you all the receipts for oil, parts, etc. to give you an indication of the serivce length/history he goes by. If he declines, keep looking. I looked at @ 20 cars before I found mine (locally) and the owner (without provocation) drove me to his mechanic so I could ask him directly how the car was.
