I have mastered the Vics and Impalas. Unfortunately, nowadays, we have the SUV's, the Camaros, a few Mustangs, and the unmarked!

It is no longer fair that Police have more than 2 varieties!!!!!

One of the best ones I learned is use a point man. Drop in and follow someone else who is speeding. Learned that from the long trip master, my buddy Ron (RoninLB from the board).

Or another variation is what I like to call the middle of the pack. You get behind one or two speeders, and you have one or more behind you. So if a patrol car comes from the front or the back, you're not the first car they see.

Jeff, are they still using unmarked personnal cars for patrol on Oahu?

Matt, yes...and the selection gets weirder each year. Now the only thing I can look out for is that extra antenna...tho it's confusing as some stock cars (like anything with Onstar) come with it. Oh well...not like there's anywhere to go fast anyway.

Luckily, we're still 95% Vic's and Impala's over here. Just look for the wider than normal tires .....

"One of the best ones I learned is use a point man. Drop in and follow someone else who is speeding."

And if there's nobody going fast enough to follow? Well, that's easily solved. Just pick a likely suspect: usually either a guy driving a 4WD pickup or a young girl driving a GrandAm. Neither likes to be passed ..... so just play with them a little bit and they are sure to speed up and stay ahead of you at all costs .....

I used to try that... I was in an 88 924S in Arizona.

He cut me out like a cowpoke in a rodeo... I think the problem was the rest of the pack had Arizona plates, I had California plates...

What was interesting is that he only wrote me up for doing 10 mph over. I think the ticket ended up being for "waste of a finite resource", as opposed to speeding.

Of course, no one ever really wanted to have a serious discussion comparing MPG to Gallons Per Hour and distance covered... Considering I had just spent the seven months previous to that driving from downtown San Diego to Camp Pendleton every day, and KNEW I would get 27 mpg at 65 mph, and 30 mpg at 85mph...

I forgot, that doesn't work so hot in other states, especially If you have California plates, and you're in Oregon!

Got nailed for $500+ radar ticket about a week after getting my Targa. Immediately sent off for a Valentine 1 radar dectector. It's range and sensitivity is as good or better than the best on the market the major plus is the directional arrows. This things tells you what kind of radar, how many, where they are and how close. Tracks up to eight bogies. I couldn't make it on the hwy without that thing now. Kinda like having an F-111 radar screen. Not a single ticket in the last 3 years and I haven't slowed down except when traffic condition dictate it's too stupid to speed.

I do a lot of highway miles with no radar detector and this works consistently well. Revenue generation opportunities for the state you are in will sometimes overrule.

I got nailed in Kentucky last year on the Bluegrass Pkwy the day before Thanksgiving using the pointman method. I know better than to ever speed on this road, but the guy in front of me was really rolling. Cop nailed the pointman and pulled him over. When I passed he saw the out of state plates and he decided to let that guy go and get me instead . Stuck me with the speed he nailed the pointman with also. Total BS, but it was going to be tough to fight it without staying in KY for the court date. Much easier to send the check in and take driving school

Louisiana is notorious for targeting out of state motorists as well. Be careful when you drive down here

How far back are you guys behind the pointman? I try to stay back at least 1/4 mile - usually, my detector goes off well in advance anyway and the pointman drives blindly into the radar trap.

Curt it depends on the highway. If it's Hwy 80 in Sacramento or the Bay Area, about 20 feet or less most of the time. If it's Hwy 36 that I take to work, 1/4 mile works. It really depends on the traffic density, and that can change very fast in Cali, depending on where you are.

What Brian said about changin lanes is true. I have plenty of CHP buddies that have told me, the less movement the better. That is unless you're hogging the fast lane.

Don't forget to slow down when cresting a hill. My wife still hasn't figured this one out. A couple of weeks ago she got nailed going 97 in a 65. I asked her if her V1 went off and she said it did but she thought it was the backing up radar on the SUV in front of her. And she complains about my driving!
