Porsche Crest BLACK 997, posibly the best looking P-car ever

I just saw last night on my drive home a 2005 very BLACK 997"S".

WOW - I hate to say it but I am thinking this car might be the only one (in my eyes) that is worthy of kicking my current ride out of the garage.

No doubt, they are beautiful. I'll pick one up for a daily driver in a few years, for about 1/2 of today's MSRP if they follow the 996 trend. A silver vert would go perfect next to my Range Rover and 930, but it will NEVER replace the old P-car. My 930 is my Time Machine, I was a kid in the 80's but I still loved that decade and nothing says 80's excess like a Guards Red 930!

I saw a grey one in London, parked right next to a 996 in the exact same color. I prefer the 997, but I have to admit that there's still a lot I don't like about the way they've made the butt so fat and the nose so pointy.

Still, when I see them in L.A., now, they look cool.

I agree, if you would have asked me just last week, I would have said the same.

Then I saw it last "night", in BLACK, so stealthy, yet shiny.

I't is definetly my next P-car (as soon as I can budget for it)

All it needs are some retro-modern version of the Fuch wheel.

LOL - Not to worry, I got a dead 3.2 motor that needs a top end rebuild to keep me from going Escalade shoping.

Besides, if I really wanted a 5,000lbs pig, I would go H1 or Cayenne turbo

The new butt is too high, in my opinion.

I like wide, but not swollen.

Wide:

I like round but petite.....

I suppose it is now time to post this quote:
The 356 “resembled a Bavarian laundry woman from the rear.” p. 227 in Seif, Ingo. 1985. PORSCHE: PORTRAIT OF A LEGEND. This was in a discussion of how svelte the then new 911 looked.

This thread has increased my interest in the 997 so I surfed the 997 board on rennlist and saw this:

http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/showthread.php?t=170694

It appears that this owner had a less than perfect experience with a new one. I have not paid much attention to them, mainly because there is no way I can afford one, but I did see one at the dealer when I was picking up some touch up paint for my car. They are SWEET LOOKING, that is for sure. But for that kind of money I would expect the world and this buyer clearly experienced the worst of what has become of the "new" Porsche.

I'll take my good old reliable classic 911, complete with the seat of the pants feel that died with the... well that's up for debate but clearly the 996 changed things for the 911 forever. The new cars make great daily drivers and are fast as *$#@, but something is lost that the 911 embodied for so, so long.

bigrubberjeep: I meant to say this in my first post, but your car is very sweet, I would think twice before selling it, even if it were for a new "911".

I want to see a new 997 turbo, GT3, and GT2, and I want to see them upgraded.

I was flipping through my newest Road & Track tonight and came across a short note about the upcoming C6 replacement for the Z06. How's this for stats.

7.0L dry sump, 500 hp, 475 ftlbs, titanium valves and con rods, forged crank, CNC machined intake and exhaust ports, 0-60 less that 4, 1/4 in 12.0, top speed of 190, cf front fenders and hood, 275-35-18 and 325-30-19, 14" and 13" brakes clamped by 6 piston calipers using 6 separate brake pads (what's that all about) with 4 pistons and pads on the rear, aluminum frame rails, and a magnesium engine cradle. Yowza

The Porsche turbo is still a porsche and does a helluva job, but I want to see it way out in the lead just like it was in years gone by.

That new Z06 is just insane; cars just keep getting faster and faster. The new Ferrari 430 does 0-60 in 3.5 sec., , an 11.7 sec. 1/4 mile, over 200 mph., etc...

That is performance in the 1 liter superbike catagory, and that is Ferrari's entry level car, if it can really be called that. Technology marches on.....

The problem with the Corvette is it's, well, a Corvette. They have always been, and probably always will be, fiberglass throwaway hotrods for rednecks. Yes, they are fast as heck and they look good for a while, until the paint inevitably fades and the interior starts to fall apart. But they have no real lasting value (other than the very early models from the 60's). How many ten to twenty year-old Corvettes do you see out on the road these days? Not many - because they've mostly fallen apart and been relegated to the scrap heap. On the other hand, look at how many old Porsches are still out there looking great and running even better?

The Porsche has always had what the Corvette will never really have - panache, presence, and quality.

Yep, and at the same time, since the big block years the Porsche has had the vette on everything, especially the turbo. It shouldn't matter, but I'd like to keep it that way. Yes, there's a reason that the corvette is so cheap (relatively), but through the 70's, 80's, and 90's the 911 has been a darn fast car, faster than most vettes, and if the base hasn't been faster then the turbo definitely has been.

And these days the corvette is getting good at stopping and going around corners too unlike the older vettes that weren't in the same league as the 911 in cornering and stopping.

I think the Corvette is the victim of it's own heritage...that is American engineerings system of 'planned obslescence'...substantial body style changes every 3-5 years render all but the early 'Vettes to a secondary market, whereas the Porsche 'lines' have been pretty much held as sacred, an appreciation of timeless engineering in the European tradition.......
