Magazines

I just got Excelence mag and GT. In excelence there are good stuff from B. Anderson, but way too much advertisment. Even hard to read since there are so many. GT is somewhere btw exc. and 911&porsche world.
I will go for a subscription and since my opinion is based only on 1 copy off Exc. and GT and more 911&porsche i would like your opinion on these.
911&porsche world is the best of them for me now.

Why not add Christophorus? I've had a subscription since 2000.
It's kinda glitzy but there are stories for people with interests other than Porsches.
My wife reads it and enjoys it for that reason.
Her interests in Porsches has increased significantly during the past several years. Every little bit helps.

I really don't buy them anymore.......not because I am cheep but because it generally has newer model stuff for cars that i can't afford anyway.

that said I offen wonder why (because this Board is a resourse) that an admission price should be charged. Such as buy "X" amount of parts from pelican a year and get the membership.

the bonus would be for both pelican and the member because you get a great knowledge base and they sell you the parts.

25 dollars a year seems good......if your cars perfect kthen buy some wax or swepco or something.

magazines as we know them will die out based on internet availability.

Besides I have never met some of the greats like B.A.
but I have met some (not in person) greats like Thom, Warren, Bill, Tyson, John Walker, Juan, Jack, and of of course Wayne (sorry to the ones I missed) and listened to what they have to say for years now.....Much better then any Magazine.

I guess that I am saying that this is my magazine with constant articles every day.......you can't beat that!!!!!

I enjoy reading Excellence. I have a subscription.

I used to buy 911 and Porsche world, but I haven't bought one in several years. It just didn't do it for me. Not sure why, especially since most of my favorite car mags are from the UK.

GT Purely Porsche has pretty pictures. Occasionally they have an article about a specific car that I am interested in and I'll buy that one, but I don't get much out of it either. I think I only have about 3 or 4 issues.

Excellence and this board gives me what I need Porschewise, then Road and Track, Octane, and Motorsport. Road and Track gives pretty well written reviews and has Peter Egan, and the other two are mostly for vintage stuff.

I really like 911&porsche world. I first stumbled upon it when I was in London earlier this year. A lot of SC and 80s Carrera articles in it.
And the thing I like best about Panorama is that it fits neatly on the toilet tank.

Speaking of London, what's up with this 3+ weeks of rain out here in CA? Enough already! I wanna drive.

I think all the mags have become no more than advertising mediums...a shame, too

We need to remember Wayne PAYS for this site. On the other hand one of the many reasons for its remarkable success is that it is free to us. Those that charge seem to die quickly. Then there are those that bombard you with advertising, pop-ups, and sell your e-mail address – no thanks. All things close to equal, I’ll steer my business toward Pelican.

Remember, guys like BA get paid by Excellence (not nearly what he is worth) where Panorama is an all-volunteer operation (the editor gets some money but again not anything close to the effort.) Porsche A.G. pays for Christophorus and that is why the subscription price is only US$ 28 for one of the world’s slickest automotive rags.

Our house gets Christophorus, Pano, and Excellence for Porsche specific magazines. We also get Chris Economaki’s National Speed Sport News, Auto Week, SCCA SportsCar, Racer, Formula, and others. As we have edged out of kart racing we have let go some of perhaps seven+ racing kart publications.

There is no substitute for information – print, on-line, or in person.

Best,
Grady

I agree, info is golden. But the slick mags have reduced the amount of usable info to such a small amount, that with the proliferation of the internet, they don't make much sense except for something to do while you use the bathroom.

I was reading the last 911 & Porsche World, and it includes a review of an early car where the magazine's editor admits he prefers other Porsche models to the 911.

In fact, both of the early car articles seemed to be written by guys who didn't much care for the early 911 at all.

Really disappointing.

I've subsribed to several and "Excellence" is second to Pelican Bulletin Board hands down. You chose what interests you the most!
Thanks Jack & Pelican Parts!

Sure, there is some (usually interesting) fluff.
Periodicals like Christophorus also are full of interesting
technical information – some times not easily available
any where else – for example in Oct-Nov ’04:

"
"
(C) 2004 Dr Ing. h.c. F. Porsche A.G.

Notice there are illustrations, dimensions of the wheels,
speced tires, AND part numbers. VERY worthwhile info.

Best,
Grady

Jacko, I guess your new to the porsche world . I cant see anyone on this board asking why would you need wheel specs . But since you asked ... Its valuable info if your seeking larger wheels for your car and dont want to spend big $$$ on a set of wheels that have the wrong offset or are too wide . Thats just one reason to want that info . Granted its all here on pelican anyway .

Maybe my eyes are worse than I thought. I thought the wheel specs posted were only for 2004-2005 models. If so, how many of us actually own those, and intend to modify cars that new. If they are for earlier cars also, then I stand corrected.

Jacko,

Sorry, I just picked up the issue that was on top of the pile. A few weeks ago someone was ranting about Slick Porsche Magazines and I posted a reply you should read:
Christophorus magazine -- rant

This is a ’69 issue that gave a huge amount to technical information about the then new Mechanical Fuel Injection. That info is just as relevant today and I refer to it regularly.

My collection of Christophorus goes back to the early ‘50s. It has become slightly dog-eared because it is a wonderful Porsche resource that I regularly use. The same is true for Panorama, Excellence, 356 Registry, Ludvigsen, and more.

The wheel example I posted above is very useful for using current Porsche wheels on earlier cars. Note that it is issue number 310.

Best,
Grady

I suppose so. I think I just get angry when I get my latest issue of a mag, and I can read the interesting stuff in 20 mins.

My personal favorite is 911 & Porsche World. It seems to have more real reading material and doesn't seem to cater mostly to the 996 and 997 community. I've read quite a few very interesting articles about the olders cars in that mag.

That said, I buy all three every month.
