Paint-How Many Layers?

How many layers are in factory Porsche paint?
I ask because I am using aircraft stripper to remove the paint/primer from the front bumper and valance of a 1978 SC, prior to repainting. This vehicle is the original mocha brown, unwrecked, or repainted (as far as I know).
So far I have encountered the brown surface laquer, followed by grey, then yellow, then a very hard brown. Under that is white then metal.
I am starting to consider as very reasonable, the $200 price quoted by the body shop to strip the paint.

I feel your pain. When I restored my SC, I stripped both front and rear bumpers down to bare aluminum, inside and out. I used a similar commercial stripper and carefully used a dull putty knife (the aluminum gouges easy!), along with 400-600 grit wet sandpaper. It took ALOT of work, but came out great. Just be patient. Mine appeared to have just 2 layers. The actual GrandPrix white, and then a slightly more yellowish primer layer. I would suspect you are uncovering some layers of prior repaints and primers perhaps?

When I stripped my 77 924 back to bare metal (the whole car) it took forever. A great deal of patience is required and please don’t get stipper paste in your eye like I did.

I guess I should be more patient. Time to get the sandpaper out. I have been gently using a thin putty knife to remove the paint, stopping just before the final layer.
If this is a repaint, they did a heck of a job, as these color layers are the same on the backside of the bumper as well!

Put some plastic wrap over the paint stripper and let it sit awhile.

It sounds like your car has been repainted. If you couldn't tell they did a good job. The factory paint is usually a whitish/grey primer followed by the actual color.

My original GP white has an odd brown/yellow green primer under the grey... So does my SC...
