I hate "links." What's he driving?
You know, Milt Minter raced within weeks of his passing. I hope that for all of us that want to. |

Milt,
He's driving a Daytona Prototype, but I don't know who's. Yellow and white from the photos I have seen. And although you don't like links, it caught fire this morning (apparently contained to the engine compartment), but Paul's not injured. Sorry: Here's a link - http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=514&e=7&u=/ap/20050109/ap_on_en_mo/car_newman_crashes Actually, all the profit from Paul's food businesses, including his salad dressings, goes to various good charities. Also, for an old f@rt like me who got into his first track events last year and well north of his 40th birthday, I really appreciate Paul's continuation in racing. Makes me think that I might have a chance to do this for some time, now that I have found out how much fun it is! Tom

I had the pleasure of having breakfast with Mr. Newman on race day
before the Trans-Am at Brainerd, MN. (then Donnybrooke) He's the real deal at racing, and one of the nicest people I've ever met.

Yea...I have been on grid at a few SCCA races as race chair when Mr Newman ran a GT1 car. In the rain. For those who don't know GT1, think Trans Am. He raced against a couple of locals who are on the front row at the SCCA runoffs...no slouches. First lap, fist corner, around the outside. Good bye! The guy is a demon on the brakes and VERY aggresive in traffic. He's a pro. And the single most modest person I have ever met.
As Mike B. pointed out, he is one of the nicest people you will ever meet. He is getting old, and frail appearing, but it hasn't affected him in the car as far as I can see. I've raced and finished in nearly every position there is, but if he shows up, I know my finishing position just went down 1 spot.

I saw him at Lime Rock a few years ago. 106 degrees that day according to one of his tech guys with a tire temp meter.
All I now is it was freakin hot! When he got out of the car(with alot of help) he looked exhausted and over heated but still had a big smile on his face as he kicked some serious a$$ out on the track. Very cool guy indeed. I'm alot younger and it was tough just walking around that day! |

When I was in the SCCA and doing corner work at Road Atlanta, Paul Newman was a seasonal regular. He was racing his Nissan 300Z at the time. We all knew his rule that, that discussing nothing but racing, cars and the SCCA were the subjects he would jabber about, but NOT ACTING! He was a really down to earth guy, who hung out with everyone, was very approachable in the paddock and saw himself simply as a fellow racer who expected nothing special. He made you feel comfortable. I am glad he is still on the circuit as he represents the sport as a true gentleman and fan.
