Can a 915 shift fork be brazed photo ?

Can a 915 shift fork be brazed and machined? If so, what is the brazing rod compound? If no one has done this before what is a good source for a new or good used shift fork, as pelican does not offer one?

915 shift forks should be “dime-a-dozen” and readily available. Have you called Dart in Denver or JWW?

Best,
Grady

I've probably got a used one. I actually have a whole core 915 that will probably not be going back together. Make me an offer and let me know exactly what you need.

I have the fork and shaft but the other parts are probably better if you buy new. They are common replacement parts, although I probably have them too.

The output shaft is the pinion and is matched to the ring gear. They need to be replaces as a matched pair and properly setup.

Where are you located? Perhaps some of us can put an eyeball to the parts and offer assistance.

Best,
Grady

Would it be possible to send me a photo of the shaft, especially the spline where the gera fits? Thanks.

Grady,
Thanks for the offer. I am just west of Brighton on Hwy 7. However my parts are at Rogers GearHause. I left them there on friday, but will go get them tommorrow. I was thinking on having them help with the reassemble, but decided to continue the project myself and will go retrieve the parts tomorrow. I have lots of cleaning and prep work to do, so maybe sometime next week if you or some other folks are available, I would be ohnord to have any assistance.

Thanks jim,

I have read your excellent journal of assembling the 915 and adjusting the forks with your son. Great job. I may be contacting you with questions on the fork adjustments after I get all my parts. I will add those PN's to my parts list.

Are you sure you need to replace all three forks? There is a measurement one can do to check for wear between the fork and selector or operating sleeve (slider) groove (no more than .5mm or .020" gap). I have wondered how one overheats the fork/selector sleeve outer groove. Out of adjustment fork continuing to bear on the selector sleeve after it has snapped over the synchro ring? Driver leaning on the shifter thereby continually loading the fork against the selector sleeve outer groove? Jim

Perhaps you can clean this week and next weekend you host a Pelican diagnostic party. Some beer will get most to offer an opinion of some sorts.

After you get everything prepped and parts organized you can have an assembly session with you as the “designated assembler” (no beer). I have all the tools and don’t drink beer.

Best,
Grady

Jim,
You are correct about not needing to replace all 3 forks. I just need to replace the 1-2 fork. It looks like the tranny ran low on fluid at some point and the fork got very hot. It measured out at .4mm of play, but is burnt black with very bad edges on it. I will take another picture of it this afternoon and post it.

Grady,
Thanks for the idea. I will repost the offer for folks to come over next weekend. I like Fosters and Heffewiezen.
