How Original?

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone can help me regarding how some aspects to my vehicle may not be "factory original". I'm interested because in the future if I decide to sell I can offer this as a buying point.

It's an 86' 911 Carrera Targa w/ Turbolook option (wider rear flares, Turbo Brakes)

VIN WPOEBO918GS16....

1. The first point is regarding my crested fuchs. A fellow PCA member told me that factory fuchs come finished in a black matte paint and the chrome has an oxidized look. Is this accurate? Here's the pic from my car:

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1105323076.jpg

2. The "Targa" script has been replaced with a silver script on my car. Is it supposed to be black?
Here's the pic from my car:

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1105323192.jpg

3. Turbo-look tail. The rubber on my tail looks like it's been replaced. I've seen two version of this tail, one that's cupped upward at the edges and one that's smooth (mine is smooth). Which is the correct turbo-look tail?
Here's the pic from my car:

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1105323307.jpg

4. Rear fuch alloy size. The turbo-look option comes with wider rear flares. The 8 X 16" fuchs that are on the car now do not fill the wheel well very well. Was the car delivered like this or have the original wider fuchs been replace with these?
Here's the pic (it's hard to tell how wide they are):

Any insight would be greatly appreciated as these are the G.U.Q. regarding my baby.

Cheers,

Do you plan on entering a PCA concours with this car? '86 is too new for me to comment on originality. Still, concours & function are the only areas that originality counts. I say function because we've all been burned by aftermarket products that promise improvement, but don't deliver. When it's a cosmetic change, I'd say you should decide on what you think looks best. After all, you're the guy doing the driving.

You sure that's a turbo look? That looks like a standard SC/Carrera flair in that shot. Also looks like 6/7x 16 wheels.

Maybe it's the white paint throwing me off but they look like standard Carrera flares and wheels in the picture ??. Can you post a side view?.
sam.

Hey Mark, It's Wayne again.
Sorry to tell you, dude but that's not a Turbo Look.
Again, I hope you didn't buy it thinking that it was. It's a very nice Porsche, anyway. Now that you know it isn't that rare, you should hotrod the heck out of it;)

The Turbo tail and front spoiler was an option through the SC and Carrera years. Mine has the same tail and spoiler.

Did you orer any parts for your exhaust, yet?

flyenby 01-09-2005 06:16 PM

Had a turbo look m491 option, you do not have one , if the picture is correct

pwd72s 01-09-2005 06:21 PM

Hey, I said I didn't know '86! :)

Hey guys,
i have been talking to Mark offline about some exhaust upgrades for his car. I, too hope he wasn't taken by the PO about the car being a TL.
He just seems to not know alot about cars.

mark, are you still with us?
Wayne

I suppose it's best to start here and work my way down.

I did enter the car in the PCA-UCR Concours this past summer for fun. It was great to get out and meet people who love their cars as much as I do and to get some expert advice and just to try and educate myself. That's where these questions of mine have come from. I have found an excellent forum here with people who know Porsche vehicles inside out (I do not, which is obvious) and wanted to pose these questions. So please bear with me.

I'm interested in originality for two reasons:

1. As a possible selling point.
2. I just want to know.

Cheers,

The first shot is the front right wheel. It's a 7 X 16" on 205/55ZR16

The second is the right rear tire. It's 8 X 16" on 225/50ZR16

As far as the flare goes from what I gathered at out concours this summer I was told that it's midway between the Turbo and Carrera.

That car is nowhere near a factory Turbo-Look car!

That car in the picture does not have turbo fenders, and it does not have turbo brakes.

It's a regular Carrera targa, with regular Carrera brakes, a Carrera tail and polished and repainted wheels.

Hope you didn't pay a premium because you thought it was a real Turbo-Look!

Also hope you don't think you have 8s out back. Those are 7s.

(Either that, or I hope you posted the wrong pics).

The VIN (WPOEBO918GS16....) would indentify this vehicle as:
Body - Targa
Model - Turbolook
Engine 930/21
1 out of 1976 manufactured in model year 1986

I am not aware what real turbo fender and brakes look like as I haven't been around these cars much but I was assuming that since this car supposedly is a "Turbolook" that it had these. Perhaps they were changed at sometime in the past?? This is what I want to know.

I'm sure they're 8s out back ... and they don't fill the flare very well at all.

If not, could someone explain the VIN? - I'm positive I've translated it correctly.

No worries Wayne. I just want to learn more about my car. And if my questions sound stupid please bear with me. I'm trying to learn a little here.

Hi Wayne,

I somehow missed the messages in the middle ... strange.

No, I did not purchase the car thinking it was a turbolook. As I've been saying the VIN seems to identify it this way and I don't know the difference to tell.

Thanks (that's it a nice car). I like it too.

I don't know if I'm going to hotrod it but I'm still looking into the exhaust mod and perhaps I'll install a new DME once I do that.

Cheers,

That's the info I need! I checked my list of option codes and 491 is turbolook. (not one listed on my vehicle identification sheet).

Do you know how to explain the VIN? (It identifies this car as a turbolook)

Mark, you ARE still here!
Any way you could get a picture of your VIN?That would help to determine what exactly what your car is.
Another good book for you to get is "Original Porsche 911" by Peter Morgan. Tons of useful info on specs, build numbers, dates, etc.
Wayne

edit: I looked up the VIN in Mr. Morgan's book.
It indicates a US Spec. Targa for 1986. It seems you added an 8 to the VIN but that's ok. It should be WPOEB091GS16...
Post a pic of your option codes, maybe?

Jack Olsen 01-10-2005 06:06 PM

What part of the VIN is making you think it's an M491? As I read it, you have a 1986 911 Carrera Targa, with US or Canadian delivery.

Do you have M491 on your option codes?

Your pictures appear to have stock Carrera flares, stock Carrera brakes and a stock Carrera tail, along with 6-inch and 7-inch Fuchs.

Turbo brakes are black, with cooling fins, and PORSCHE text on the calipers.

Here are some pictures of M491 Targas (and one coupe).
