Removing interior door handles

I know I've seen some threads on this before but can't seem to locate them. Can anyone point me to instructions for removing the interior door handles in an '87 Carrera (or equivalent)? I'm replacing them with a set from Rennline and I'd like to avoid breaking something if possible

TIA

It would be probably easier to remove the handle held by 4 5MM Allen Bolts

Just take care not to damage the plastic retaining clips for the latch

As you are replacing them with Rennline units, I assume you mean the pieces that are originally black plastic. Are these, seen here in black aluminum, what you are referring to? If so, let me know and I'll get you the necessary steps...

Hey there,
Sorry for the late reply.

Here's how to do it:
1. Remove the door pocket, which is pretty straightforward, and involves removing about 6 screws. This affords you access to the underside of the handle.

2. Pull the handle as you would to open the door, and remove the horizontal rod that pulls the opening mechanism from the back of the handle. It's held in by a small white plastic clip, that I am pointing to here- it should pop out easily. Note that this pic doesn't show that rod, as I took this pic with the door panel off. You may need to pry it up to remove it, which is easily done with needle nose pliers. The handle should now flop around, as it's no longer attached to the door opening mechanism.

3. The handle pivots off of a 1.5 inch vertical rod, which is held in place by a small circlip on both the top and bottom of the rod. Using a pick, remove the circlips- be careful not to lose them, as they may fly off. Then using a pair of needle nose pliers, pull the rod out. Here I am pointing to where the circlips are.

4. At this point, the handle should be off. Getting it back on is the reverse, but the hardest part is getting the rod into the holes of your new metal handles. I found it was a tight fit, and I had to use a mallet to drive the rod through. Then attach the circlips, reattach the rod that activates the door open mechanism, and put your door pocket back on.

Let me know if you need any more details, but that ought to do it!

one tip - when putting the new handle on attach the circlip to the top of the rod before you install it. this will stop it from sliding down too far and you only have one clip to ruin your day for the reinstall.

Cattman,
That was excellent. I wish I knew how to "store" helpful post (like this one) that I could easily retrieve in the future. Any ideas?

Thanks, I am glad this was helpful!
In terms of "book-marking" this, you could write to Wayne and suggest he add this to his technical articles section. Or just print it out and keep it in your glove box or garage. Or search for it using words like "door handle", "circlip", "CATTMAN", etc.
Best,
CATTMAN

Or you could actually bookmark it in your brower.

My favorite for threads I know I'm going to want to read again is to subscribe to the thread - which also notifies you when the thread is updated/has new posts.

You don't need to post to the thread to subscribe; go to the top of page, just above the first post select the little triangle on 'Thread Tools' and select 'Subscribe To This Thread' from the drop-down menu that appears.

Then you get to go to your control panel ("User CP" on the menu bar, just above the Thread menus) and create a bunch of folders for various titles/subjects to file your subscribed threads under.

Guys,

I just went through the procedure of replacing my inner door handles, but the rod that I took off one of the handles end, also came out of the door end......

It looks like it goes through a small hole in the door card but I can't seem to get it attached inside the door.

I didn't really want to take the door card off....

Any help appreciated....

Cheers,

Geoff.

Hi Geoff,

Hope this helps.

Here is a diagram of your door locking mechanism.

Not very difficult, but the door card will have to come off.

You may pm me as needed.

Cheers,

Gerry

Gerry,

Thanks for the diagram.....it looks like No. 18 may have broken inside the door.

I've got spares of these clips, so it's off with the door card then...

I'll let you know how I go.

Cheers,

Geoff.

Removed the door card and this is what I found.....

Looks like the plastic clip is missing, which has caused the metal release rod to come out.

I'll put another clip in and we should be right to go.

Thanks for your help Gerry.

Cheers,

Geoff.

Adjust inner door handles

I just picked up a 85 Carrera Coupe, nice car, like it a lot. One thing I really need to adjust is the inner door handles. They stick out somewhat, they don't seem to go back flush with the door. The PO had the original's replaced with aluminum ones.

Any tips on getting them to lay flush?

Thanks

CB
