It's the Thule that's designed for a car with rain gutters. I just have the four clamps and the two cross-members. Then I got a length of C-shaped steel and some U-bolts and put a piece connecting the two crossmembers to make sure they weren't pushed apart by the tires sitting on them.

I think there's probably a better way to keep the two crossmembers at a fixed distance from each other, but I've never taken the time to do any work on it.

Do you have a pic with the tires on it?

I split this into its own thread. It originally came from the 'Driver's Ed Equipment List' thread.

Here is another Thule based solution. I took the idea from Jack and had a friend fab aluminum cross bars that distribute the tire weight across four points and have a vertical piece to keep them in place.

They now (not in this pic) have a set screw on the bottom to keep them from sliding across the 50" load bar and black pipe insulators on the verticals to keep the wheels from being damaged.

i got one on ebay for less than $50 shipped. it took a while to win one but i got over eventually. actually fabbed my own gutter pads, but i found one with 59" bars. i will bump my head getting out of the car im thinking.

never thought of tying them together as was mentioned above. got a project for next weekend.

I tried carrying my tires the way Jack did and I saw higher oil temps. It was a new motor so I thought it might be the motor. When I saw someone with the same setup on a 3.2 I asked them if they experienced higher oil temps and they said yes. That's just a couple of fuzzy data points but I think that setup may rob some air from the tail area.

Oil temps stayed just under the white line... on my gauge, this should be about 195-200F. It's when the tires are upright that oil temps may become an issue. With the tires on their sides, the air is routed to the tail area. Wind noise and the sensitivity to the wall of wind when passing trucks are my only complaint.
