* Interesting 3.6 engine build coming up *

1991 3.6:

MAF

3.8 P&C

The pistons are very unusual; not the usual 3.8 pistons. These are almost 12:1 Mahles, special ordered.

Wildest cam grind I've ever seen installed in a 3.6. More info coming -

Chip burned for race gas only

Since I had 280 RWHP - my guess is that from the compression increase, cams, and displacement increase that it will approach if not slightly exceed 300 RWHP.

Stay tuned,

I've got my popcorn sitting right here next to the computer. This should be interesting...

I would guess even higher than 300 rwhp. On displacement only you should get 295. Plys higher CR plus wilder cams. And since you say the chip is custom programmed for racing I guess the peak power will be somewhere around 325 rwhp.
Keep us posted

What kind of intake manifold are you going to use? Stock varioram? Individual throttle bodies?

Craig 930 RS 01-24-2005 07:01 AM

Matteo -

I do think it will be higher than 300 RWHP on this dyno many of us in the Seattle area use. I'd gues 303. Stay tuned - I have some pics coming up. The pistons are a sight to see.

Stock plastic 964 manifold

Is that for the law of diminishing returns? 3.6 to 3.8 = 105%...
280 x 105% = 294.

Plus increase in CR, plus wilder cams, plus racing chip.. Yeah maybe 325 rwhp is silly, but I would have thought a little more than 300... Either way it's going to fly.

Bill Verburg had a special 3.6 upgrade built for him last year. Do not believe that it was as "warmed over" as yours sounds like it will be but it was far from stock either.

Hope he chimes in here, sounds like a interesting engine!

my engine was the last one described.

Hi Bill! How's it running?

and mine was #5

please take all these #s w/ a grain of salt, a factory sprint 3.8RSR was rated ~380

Count me in at >320 rwhp ;)

Craig 930 RS 01-24-2005 01:28 PM

Craig,
It looks as though these pistons are coated. Is that Teflon? or can you tell us more about that.
Thanks.

Craig 930 RS 01-24-2005 01:35 PM

The skirts do appear to have a coating - but I'll be damned if I know what it is.

Going in this tired 66k 3.6 engine:

Those look like my pistons, if so they are 102mm, 12:1 Mahles, the coating is 3 - 4 mm Grafel coating

You didn't show the trickest part which is the tapered wrist pins

Craig 930 RS 01-24-2005 02:06 PM

Yes, 12:1 pistons Bill. The wrist pins are indeed tapered - think megaphones on each end - big end outwards.
